Eenie-Meenie's Up Close and Personal Observations of the Jazz players' shooting ability

[Getting Traded]

I was at the Pacers game and had very good seats, in the lower section but not down on the floor. Being a little higher than the backboard, and behind the basket but not directly really gave me a good view of things.

First of all I watched them shooting in practice. They shot right at the basket where I was sitting. About the shooters:

Favors, yes Favors, now has one of the best releases / touches on the team. Great rotation and follow-through.

Burks needs a shooting coach. He gets very little follow through which makes his shots flat, and which is why he often clanks shots off the rim.

Booker has a terrible release. He'll never be a very good shooter with the way he shoots the ball.

Ingles is probably one of the team's best shooters.

Neto has a good stroke. He's going to develop into a good shooter

Hayward is good but not great. His shot needs improvement

Hood, we all know what a great stroke he has.

Burke has a decent shot. You would think he'd have a better percentage (I think a lot of his problem is mental).

Johnson has a nice stroke.

Millsap, better than Booker, but that's not saying much.

The big guys didn't shoot much from the outside, Lyles a bit -- his shot is ok but needs work.

What kind of a dumb question is that? I just learned about the tickets last night and didn't think about bringing it. I could've used my cell, but it doesn't have a good camera. What can I say -- I wished now that I did bring it. But I'm thinking of coming to SLC for a game, so I'll bring it then.

dang. I feel like every single assistant coach has worked with Alec on his shot too. Who woulda thought that Kawhi would emerge as the better shooter from the 2011 draft.

Hmmm, interesting. This is from an article written after our pre-season opener (Link to source):

Burks, meanwhile, believes he can be an even better shooter this year thanks in part to his nine-month hiatus from game action. His injury forced him to refine his shooting form, which, he said, has helped give him a softer arc instead of a line-drive dart at the basket.

"I had to learn how to shoot again," Burks said this week. "I tore my labrum, so I and to learn basically the shooting mechanics again. I feel like it's going to help me in the long run with a better shot."

Also interesting, I remember when the Jazz signed him they said he had good mechanics on his jumper and they thought they could extend his range out to the three-point line, which they did. Having said that, he's been terrible so far this year. Perhaps they've both regressed to old bad habits?

jeez, you'd think Alec's 3pt shooting %'s were bad the way people portray him around here.. Seems kinda pompous if you ask me..

He's never shot lower than 35% from 3 since a rookie when he shot 33%.. So at worst, he's mediocre..

Not everyone shoots the ball on the same trajectory.. It's not like Alec's wildly inconsistent with his shot.

Not everyone shoots the ball on the same trajectory.. It's not like Alec's wildly inconsistent with his shot.

His release off his hand isn't bad, but he doesn't follow through, it's not smooth but more of a push because his arm doesn't extend, like for instance Joe Ingles, who has great follow through.

Have to agree with ab on this one. Like he said above, he's never shot worse then 35%, not great, but not bad either. There's a perception he can't shoot because he doesn't shoot many threes.

Have you been to the games and ever watch these guys in person? Alec's shot is still flat, and it's because of his lack of follow through that causes him to aim the ball rather than shoot it. Being an amateur who has played all his life in men's leagues (with officiating) and been a pretty good shooter -- made 5 3's in a game once, I've noticed this in my own shooting that when I don't focus on my follow through I start to clank shots but when I follow through I get a nice arc and lot of string music.
