Jazz going after Conley. How do they make it happen?

Book it.

All this media and team gushing over him before and after the game.

Face it, he'd be a perfect fit. Low usage, good defensively, jack-of-all-trade types PG.

What do we give up at ASB, if not sooner, to get him? He's a UFA at the end of the season, and it's known he's not eager to extend at this time. Do we have to wait, or will Memphis be smart and get assets before he hits the market? Will they want expirings, or a badly needed scorer? Conley will be well sought after and his salary will require us to pony up an asset (a "core" piece) to get him.

Do you want him and what are you willing to give up to make it happen?

Me?

Burks + Trey Burke OR Dante Exum OR Trey Lyles + picks = Conley

That seems really expensive to me. Am I crazy and/or stupid?

Flame away JF!

What if he hits the market before the offseason? What if they secure a sign and trade?

Why would Conley or the Jazz do that? The only reason a sign-and-trade would make sense for the Jazz is if we were capped out and Conley for some reason really wanted to be here.

No ****ing way.

He is on the last year of his contract. This is a terrible idea. I would love to have him, but it be a 1 year rental. If we want him, we can offer him a ton of money in UFA.

S&T's barely ever happen anymore. I have no idea what Conley will get paid in the off-season, but I'm assuming somewhere in the 16-20 million dollar range, so that would be a tough S&T to pull off with anyone.

Yep. Even with Conley, the Jazz aren't making that much noise this season. Might as well wait for him to hit free agency, and keep all the players and picks that would be needed to land Conley in a trade.

True true. So waiting until FA is the way to go, right? We'd be competing with everyone else for him anyway, so we'd essentially have to sell him on Utah. Thanks for helping my brain.

Not totally out of the realm of possibility.

I would LOVE Conley on this team

I doubt Conley would be an off-season target. Would probably cost too much money. Probably a better idea to just look at upgrades to Booker.

It's a buyer's market for PGs in 2017. We're (er...the Millers) going to have a ton of cap space. Plus we'll have seen Exum for a whole year and will have a better idea if he is PGOF material or not.

Should they go get him?

It depends on if they want to commit to keep him as a free agent. Just like Dragic to the Heat, you go trade for him IF you want that 1/2 season edge in recruiting and his Bird rights.

What would it cost?

That all depends on if the Grizzlies are in the playoff hunt. I don't think they trade him if they are. If they're out, the fact that he's a free agent at the end of the year depresses his market. Dragic went for two future 1st round picks and fodder. Wouldn't surprise me to see Conley fetch a similar deal. Jazz have a boatload of picks, Booker's expiring, Burke/Neto and Lyles as assets before even considering that top 6 core group of Gobert, Favors, Hayward, Burks, Hood and Exum. None of them are in the conversation.

Burke has done well enough that they shouldn't burn assets for a guy that isn't a clear upgrade to the starting lineup. Conley would be worth having a conversation about IMO.

I'd rather we go after somebody a bit younger if I'm perfectly honest.

Conley's production leveled off last season dropping to 15.8 ppg, 5.4 assists, 1.3 steals... it's gone down again this year (albeit because Memphis is struggling as a team). Seems to me he has peaked physically though which is not a good sign...

If we're going to throw crazy money at a PG with a young & exciting team of Gobert, Favors, Hayward, I think we can do better than Conley in 2017 FA class.

How does that change if we trade for him? He'll be an UNRESTRICTED FA. So we'll still be competing with every other team. There is little to be gained by "selling" him on the team by giving up a ton of assets to get him for 35 games, He'll be sold by playing against the Jazz and us kicking his butt 4 times, He'll be sold if the Jazz finish with a good seed in the playoffs.

Just asking, but what value do Bird rights have if a team is nowhere near the salary cap? It's not like Utah is going to offer him $30M/per next summer.
