Official UofU homer thread

Dropped out of the AP poll, what a fall from No.3, Oregon game seems like forever ago.

It is depressing because we were seemingly in the driver's seat for a while there.

But there have been signs, when Washington was handing us the game on the silver platter and we couldn't put them away. When we failed to do much offensively vs. a Oregon State team that's been a punching bag for everyone else in the pac-12. Obviously the Arizona game where we can't put together a scoring drive to finish them off. We just aren't a good offensive team, period. And it looks like it'll continue to be that way while Whittingham is the head coach.

I don't want to jump on Whitt, it was a couple months ago that we were all worried that he'd leave for a bigger school....Don't want to be one of those fans that's all about the coaching staff during wins and turn against them in losses. Travis is a 4 year starter, he has to be the one to shoulder losses for on field miscues.

Actually, when there was Whitt-to-USC talk, I found myself day dreaming about Utah hiring an offensive oriented coach as his replacement and what that could open up for Utah.

During the offseason when Whitt and the AD were having some issues I was totally fine with him leaving too.

I think if Whittingham's offensive flaws weren't so apparent he would have been offered a higher paying job a long time ago.

That's what happens when you finish last in passing offense in the conference every year

These thoughts are exactly right and while some Ute fans will undoubtedly come to Whitt's defense, the way he's mishandled the offense is pretty sad. From handcuffing OC's and QB's to switching OC's for 7 years running, no P5 school can beat Utah when it comes to offensive chaos.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot I like about Whitt, but for as long as he's here, you better make your peace with the fact that we're going to be exactly what we've seen during our first 5 years in the PAC.

I think a fair comparable is Iowa. As long as Whitt roams the sidelines, we're the PAC 12 version of the Hawkeyes. What that boils down to is a no frills, physical football team that is well coached. Most years you'll see around 7 or 8 wins and a decent bowl game. As we're seeing with Iowa right now, every once in a blue moon you'll see a very special season and you can sprinkle in a sub .500 year here or there. During Kirk Ferentz's tenure at Iowa, he's won at about a 60% clip. While Whitt is winning at a higher rate (right around 70%), we must take into account that just over half of Whitt's tenure was in the MWC. Some were mighty pissed off at how Chris Hill handled Whitt this offseason and even I was perplexed, but the more I look at it, the more I think Hill knows exactly what he's doing. I think he's happy to have Whitt, but he's also well aware of Whitt's track record offensively. In all honesty, should Hill be willing to bend over backwards for a guy with Whitt's track record with QB's and offensive upheaval? I think Hill will continue to run the program on his terms and the second Whitt has finally had enough, Hill will wish him the best and then start calling the likes of Dan Mullens.

Let's be honest.....Gary Anderson is, was, and will be the only candidate considered for the Utah job when Whitt is no longer there. You guys are staying defense first.

I believed that before Gary's move to OSU and all the stuff that has transpired since then. Chris Hill has a long memory, plus I don't think he wants to hire Whitt Jr if he ever gets out from under Whitt.

Hill remembers the traction he got from the Urban hire. He is going to be looking for a recruiting/offensive wizard.

Incoming JC recruit Troy Williams threw for 383 yards and 7 TD's in his JC's bowl game this past weekend. Yes it's JC ball, but if he can give us half that production, it would be a positive.

How many times is a JC quarterback actually good besides Cam Newton?

Bottom line, hire Mike Leach. Has dude ever had a bad QB hucking for him? He obviously has a good eye for QB recruits, developing QBs, or calling plays. Probably all of the above. You put him with the type of lineman Utah high school football produces and that Utah typically recruits......could be special.
