Great insight from Boler/Locke

First of all, this is not a thread to debate whether or not you like these two as play-by-play guys. Whether you like them or not, the fact is that that over the last few years these two have spent quite a bit of time around Deron when the microphones aren't rolling. Both were very candid this afternoon about several off the court conversations they've had with D-Will. In fact, I thought I heard Locke mention that he felt he could be a bit more candid now that D-Will is gone.

For those who missed it, the overall rundown:

-Locke said he had 2 private conversations with D-Will in regards to whether he thought he'd leave Utah or not. He said the first conversation made him think D-Will was definitely a goner. He said the 2nd conversation was Deron spit-balling about what close by state he would move to if he did indeed stay with Utah. Locke made it pretty clear that D-Will didn't care for SLC or any of the surrounding areas. He said he felt like D-Will's priorities for leaving Utah were: #1- VERY sick of the cold weather, #2 Honestly didn't think Utah was good enough, and #3- He does indeed want to play for a large market team.

-Boler said he also was certain D-Will would leave based on private conversations. He went on to say that much of Jazz management see's D-Will as a player who will likely play for 3 or 4 teams over the course of his career and quite a few different coaches. Boler said it was too bad because Utah fans wanted to love Deron and would have treated him like a folk hero his entire career but there was always something stopping Deron from truly embracing Utah and it's fans. He said he always got the sense from being around D-Will that Utah was just not what he wanted out of his career. Said he always saw something lacking in Deron in regards to being happy here.

Both agreed- and I agree with them that Utah made a good move and basically made a move they had to make. Deron WAS NOT staying in Utah regardless of who they brought in. Both pointed out that Utah losing Deron for nothing was a huge possibility and would probably devestate the Jazz franchise long term.

Well if this is true then why not try to make a better deal. It seems everyone around the NBA had no clue that the Jazz wanted to move DW. I am sure if people really thought they would move DW there might have been a better deal.

Nevertheless, your comments are very interesting and I am not so mad about the trade if it is true that DW didn't want to be here.

After hearing everything today and taking all of this in, I have to say our FO did an outstanding job. I honestly never thought our management would ever do such a thing, but they've set us up to rebuild right away and avoided a huge mess next year.

You don't think we got a great deal? Looking at the other teams wanting to make a move or needing a star PG, New Jersey had by far the best trade value. I'm giving major props today to our FO. KOC and Greg really did an outstanding job with this.

I'm not saying a better deal could not have been found, but I find it unlikely. Favors is still a very highly regarded prospect, Harris is actually not a bad PG and is still relatively young at 28 (although I don't think he's the long-term future at PG) and the Jazz have lottery picks in 2011 and 2012 that both could very well end up being top 5 picks. Those are 4 pretty good assets acquired for a disgruntled All-Star who wanted no part of being a member of the Utah Jazz.

You don't know what kind of deals the Jazz worked on before this one. It's very possible this was the best they could get and it isn't all that bad. Utah is better today than they would have been had Deron Williams up and left the franchise a year from now.

I loathe both of these clowns, but I'm glad to hear it. Now read my location.

Remember New Jersey has been eager for some months to pull a trade for a *star* player; if we don't do this now, New Jersey goes elsewhere for a deal. And, we're known to have been very interested in Favors when he was drafted.
Add to this, going back to last off-season, we were very lucky Chicago gave us a trade exception for Boozer, although I've read we actually gave them a round 2 pick for the exception. Without that, no Big Al in Utah either...
Sounds like the Crymelo saga was a huge influence on the Jazz brass decision to trade DWill now and at least get something in return. This was a move they needed to make. Favors seems to have the physical tools to be a star in the NBA, and at 19, has plenty of time to develop mentally and physically. Favors, Jefferson, and Millsap give us a solid interior rotation for the future. This also covers us in the event Memo doesn't return to form.
Devon Harris, Earl Watson, and Ronnie Price will all push the ball hard from the point, and play that pesky D. Neither of which suits DWill's style. We'll likely struggle the rest of the year to mesh, but in a year or two when the youthful Hayward and Evans mature, we could be a very good ballclub again rather quickly. Plus, there's all those lottery picks we can use for wings...

Dude your location never changes. Krispy Kreme, we all get it. Ha ha.

I never thought I would ever say this but that is pretty good insight from Boler and Locke. I expected some kind of bang down comment from Boler but otherwise that is interesting info.

Boler:
He went on to say that much of Jazz management see's D-Will as a player who will likely bang down 3 or 4 teams over the course of his career and quite a few different coaches.

On the comments from Boler and Locke, I felt like it was ditto from Harpring during the broadcast (sorry no link). He said he didn't know for certain what Deron had said, but it sure sounded to me like he had some kind of source. Whether it was Deron himself (and was just protecting him) or Boler/Locke/others, I think he knew more than he let on.

While this is still a shock. I'm am convinced they don't make this deal if they believe there was a great chance at keeping him. My ideal scenario now is watching him walk away from the Nets with them getting nothing. :)

I think every GM knew the Jazz were looking to move Deron. KOC would have made those calls. KOC is VERY good at maintaining silence and demanding the same of his trade partners. The Jefferson deal was not leaked until the night before (by Greg Miller), even though the trade talks had begun at the previous all-star break. The AK "almost deal" was only leaked after it fell apart (and KOC was not pleased). You can bet KOC made calls to every GM to get offers. If you believe what has been said, Deron was shopped earlier this year and NO ONE heard about it. That KOC keeps talks secret - and demands the same of others - makes me really respect the man.
