What's new

What do we want each player to work on?

Add DL to this conversation. Cut the large gap between the starting 5 and the bench by adding some proven veteran players, preferably with experience in clutch situations.

Exum - shooting, taking contact, work core strength, running the team. Getting some post moves would be amazing so he can take advantage of his height.

Mack - spend time with his teammates this summer. Work on his quickness.

Neto - needs to work on his speed and court vision. Spend the summer at p3.

Hood - needs to work on his strenght. Spending time at p3 would be great. He needs to get quicker and take contact better. I would also like to see him het some post moves.

Burks - get healthy and stay healthy. Needs to add more strength. 3 point shooting and court vision.

Burke - finding a new appartment in a new city. I will pray that the jazz can get something for him.

Hayward - needs to lead a bunch of dungeon raids to the max boss he can find. He needs to learn lead. He needs to get the desire to kill.

Ingles - p3 p3 and more p3.

Favors - needs to work his core to help his back. I want to see some go to post move.

Lyles - p3 p3 and more p3. I want to see him more explosive.

Gobert - needs to do a lot with weights balls a lot. Work his hand strength. He needs to work the tennis balls on the wall. He needs a back to the basket move and passing out of it.

Quin - needs to work an a quicker offensive scheme. Run a more pressing offensive attack off a miss even if it doesnt creat a shot put preassure on the defense.

Exum- Health, aggressiveness, 3 pt
Hood- Consistency, adjusting to opponent's game plan
Hayward- A new contract below market value
Favors- Health, mid-range
Gobert- Consistency, hands
Lyles- Defense, rebounding, strength
Burks- Health
Burke- A trade
Snyder- In-game adjustments, game management
DL- A superstar

Hayward needs to be better in the post. I saw him get beat by Tony Parker and blocked by Avery Bradley. He's big enough and strong enough. I really think he can get better in the post and this will help the Jazz a ton. (It actually gives me a lot of hope that Hayward was so terrible with his back to the basket this year. He could really improve and become a 25+PPG player.)

Maybe we should realize Gobert will never have great hands. It's a struggle for big men. Maybe point guards should stop throwing him low passes. From what I understand (which isn't much,) it's basketball 201 not to throw a pass at the big man's knees.

I read an article somewhere that said Exum has changed his shot? He's been working on his form and has changed how he shoots. Anyone else read this? Where did I see it? I'm always amazed at how people get to the NBA with bad shooting form. Favors' shot was pretty ugly when he got to the Jazz, its taken a long time, but it looks pretty good now.

https://stats.nba.com/league/player/#!/playtype/post-up/?dir=-1&sort=PlayerFirstName

So people have actual stats, not just "Remember that one time he got blocked? he sucks at posting up".

According to the stats, he is the 52.7% percentile on post-up efficiency. So he is a very average post player, but he hardly ever post-up (he actually has the 14th lowest post-up frequency of his possessions. The only SF with a lower frequency is Otto Porter (Aminu is tied with Hayward) I just don't think it's a very reliable thing in Utah's offense with Favors/Gobert. Maybe it's something he could get better with if he plays with Lyles more.

The one clear positive about Hayward's post up game is that he actually does draw FT trips out of his post-ups at a high rate compared to the rest of the league and he turns the ball over at an extremely low rate compared to the rest of the league out of his post-ups.

I read that Exum Article. He's working on releasing the ball with one hand instead of two or something, which will make it a smother higher arcing shot.

Hayward - Floater
Exum - Dribbling, lay-ups, 3pters
Hood - Getting to the rim, defense
Favors - Post-up game, passing
Gobert - Hands, Rolling to the rim, post-up game
Burks - Mid-range game, passing
Neto - Getting to the rim
Lyles - Defense, body, rebounding

And free throw shooting for all.

Hood actually rates out as a great post-up player this year, in the 81% percentile of the league. He was 9/18 in the post this year (very limited too), had a fairly high foul shooting foul percentage of 18%, but he did turn it over in 20% of his post-ups.

I'm really having fun with NBA.com right now.

Hood actually rated out as a better isolation player than Curry this year, Hood was the 94.7% percentile of isolations! He was the best wing in isolation who had at least 100 possessions (Lou Williams was higher but only had 90). Crazy that he rated that high because he rarely gets to the FT line in ISO's (only 4%, or 4 FT trips in 100 possessions!). Add the ability to draw contact to Hood's game and he is going to be a scoring monster.

Hayward was in the 66th percentile and he really excelled at getting to the FT line in isolations. He got to the FT line on 16.5% (that's a higher % than Harden and every high usage ISO wing besides Demar Derozan) of his ISO's (170 possessions). Hayward's negative is that he turns it over in isolations more than every other high usage wing (only PG's and big's TO more frequently)

Also interesting how badly Alec performed this year in isolations. 34th percentile in isolation.

How was in Hood with TO's in ISO spots?

More interesting stats:

Shelvin Mack is an awful PNR player: 31st percentile

You know who is even worse? Raul Neto: 18th percentile

Burks, Burke, Hayward, and Hood all rated out as great PNR players though, but damn, those starting Utah Jazz PG's.
