What's new

We could have afforded Ryan Anderson to

Not even at salary floor yet. Why is DL not more active?

Yup. He's sat on his butt this off season.

Talking to Deng and Dudley
Traded for Hill
100+ player workouts
Traded Burke
Reports of calling every agent of a free agent that possibly matched
Signed JJ
Traded 2nd round picks

no we couldn't have "afforded" a 4 year 80 million dollar contract to Ryan Anerson. Anerson would not have improved the current team at all, unless you were planning on making him third string. Stop fantasizing about this guy. . .

Also apparently is working on renegotiating Gobert's contract, and maybe others.

Could have afforded him for 2 yrs. After that, $20M means Utah would have had to forgo signing Exum or Hood. As it is, by signing Gobert and probably Hayward to max offers, Favors could be a casualty. Simply can't have all those guys making $20-$30M.

Gobert is an extension not renegotiation. I think Hill's agent already said no to renegotiation. We need to save 11M in space for Favors renegotiation if he is interested.

Also Anderson at his current contract is not great. Rather have teletovic on his deal.

Backup big, stretch the floor when Favors plays the 5.

He can play the three or the four. Shooting of Favors
Anderson
JJ
Hayward
Hill

Would be hard to defend.

Jazz are still "baking the cake" to an extent. We want to get to the playoffs on the backs of our main core, not a guy like Ryan Anderson. He is probably better than Lyles at the moment, but Lyles could be better than him by the end of the year (will almost certainly be healthier). So if we got him, that would get Lyles less growth and hurt the future of our team.

Not to mention its only been 60 hours since free agency began

Lyles can not get the attempts up enough to become a threat. His shot too slow.

I don't disagree. But project the salaries in 2018. Tell me who you keep and who you cut. And dont claim Anderson is easily tradeable. We've seen how that's worked with Kanter and OKC. Anderson might make the Jazz better for 2 yrs. After that, players have to be traded or not re-signed to afford the last 2 yrs of his contract without paying a big tax bill.

I've been one of DL's harshest critics. I'm still not on board with trading a lottery pick for a likely 1 yr rental of Hill. But I love the acquisition of Johnson (2 yrs, didn't cost assets). And I'm very pleased he hasn't handed out any of these absurd 4 yr deals.

$100,000,000 if Hayward gets $30,000,000. $120,000,000 if Anderson got signed. Still below the projected LT.

Um, no.
Gordon at $30, Favors and Gobert at $25 each? Exum and Hood at $20m each? In this market, those are EASILY what each player will get. That's $120m for just 5 players. Even if you bring it down $10m, you still have 8 more players to sign, including Lyles.

Exum an Hood have team options. We do not need resign until 2019.

Except that as Cy mentioned, Lyles will probably be healthier and better by the end of the year playing a rookie contract. Lyles at least has the capability of playing defense at an NBA level as well. Lets roll gor a few months in this jalopy and see exactly what holes are remaining, THEN use some capspace.

The capability salary-wise to sign a a particular player =/= the ability to sign that player.

Do we still not understand this, FFS?
