Hayward may be crunched by this year's spending

is anyone really deluding themselves into thinking that Hayward will get anything less than the max? he is one of the best multipurpose players in the league, he is getting the max, whether or not we keep him will depend entirely on whether or not he likes his situation here.

Boston can offer 1 max. Hayward plus Horford plus Smart is not a better situation that what he has now, nor does it make Boston anywhere close to a contender. If Boston is actually looking to shoot the moon, they will be looking further upriver than Hayward. Hayward to Boston because of a coach Hayward played 2 years for is kind of ridiculous.

I agree with you. Even though we can't predict what the Celtics will actually do, one thing is certain: Hayward addition will not make them a title contender - even in the crappy East. That's a more than good reason for them not to offer him a maximum contract and retain some flexibility for the following offseason. I think even for the Jazz would not make sense to offer him a maximum contract purelly in terms of his game. But offering Hayward the max may make sense for the Jazz in terms of the perception of the fan base, since losing him for nothing may signal to the fans that the ownership is not willing to spend enough to compete for a title, which would alienate them - to say the least. I think ninety percent of people on this board, for instance, would go absolutely bonkers if something like that happen.

Boston would be a VERY real threat to sign Hayward. That team would be very, very good, especially defensively. Bradley, Smart, Brown, Crowder, and Hayward defending the wing positions... But, I really don't see Hayward going anywhere unless we have an unsuccessful season like someone said. He would have to take a sizeable pay cut and, assuming we are a winning team, leave a good situation.

Sure Hayward isn't classified as one of the top 10 "superstars" but I don't think Boston would think twice about offering him a max.

I believe they offered Hayward's max to Horford. The next big signing will have to be a Westbrook type alpha. There also comes the point that if the Jazz go nowhere with THIS team, a large part of that will lie on Hayward's shoulders. That isn't going to happen though. Overall, the Jazz will resign Hayward with little problem as he will not get a better offer and situation anywhere else. If we max him, even if it in the area where it is under the max, but more than anyone else can pay, we should be able to easily keep him.
