What's new

ACL tears,BR has 2017 draft with Giles #2(2 tears) and #4 Smith(1 tear),so why so much doubt on Exum

I agree completely. If he's healthy, and after 15 months there is no reason to think he won't be, he needs to start and/or have the bulk of the minutes at PG.

It's not just the ACL, its the lack of playing time at this stage of his career that hurts more.

The lack of playing time will always be an issue if he's on the bench. You can only learn so much by watching.

helpful, thanks

I try not to watch the sixers, but it was more a question of whether he's recovered from the ACL tear he had before he was drafted.

sorry, that's just the overwhelming feeling i get watching him. Athletically he's fine, in fact that's kindof the only thing he has going for him. Moves very well and good vertical explosion

Stockton, drafted at the age of 22, was a back up during his first three years in the league, playing only 18, 23 and 22 minutes per game in those seasons , while improving his efficience year after year. I don't see why Exum, who is only 21 by now, should be promoted already.

We are talking about a player, Exum, who shot 35% from the field during his rookie season - which was the second worst in the whole league among players who took at least 400 shots ( https://bkref.com/tiny/M0sjh ).

Stockton had to earn his starting job against a solid veteran and I don't see why Exum shouldn't be asked to do the same. He should play for sure, but his playing time should be the result of a balance between his ability to contribute to the team more than the players with whom he is competing for playing time and the Jazz need to develop him and teach him how to run a team - something he is far from capable of doing at this point.

People are going to be surprised how ****ing good we are with Hill. Exum will get his minutes, but he's going to have to take the starting spot from Hill, and anyone assuming he will deserve it from the get go, is underestimating George Hill as a player.

Even when Exum was starting and we were kicking *** and taking names, Exum wasn't playing starters minutes, he was splitting equal time with Treyd. Now he's got a legitimate starter he'll have to compete with.

i feel Exum is almost redundant to our hopes for this season now, if he's really good, then great but our outlook for the season is based on what George Hill will bring.
It's the season or two after that the spotlight will be on him. There's seriously no rush, and he's played one season of basketball of any meaning. He's got a lot of learning to do and now the Jazz have bought him a bunch of time to do it in.

It has now been 12 months since the injury. Also, jabari sucked for a couple months when he came back. Exum will look great midseason.

I agree for the most part with this approach. Bringing a player along slowly and not forcing things can be effective. But given that the Jazz current plans seem to be re-signing Hayward and Gobert to massive contracts within the next 12 months it's imperative that they have some sort of idea of what they have from their young players ASAP. Before they ink those deals. Because once those deals are done flexibility goes away and you are relying heavily on these young guys like Dante to improve. You want some idea of what you have. Continuing to wait means they're going into the future blind.

Exum has tremendous potential & is unquestionably the team's PG of the future but it all comes down to one word: Hayward. The FO is committed to seeing how far this core can go & step 1 of doing so is re-signing Hayward. As talented as Exum may be & as possible as it may be that he'll be able to return without the injury having an impact on his performance, the FO has decided not to allow the play of a 21 year old PG (who is coming off of a serious injury & showed limited offensive production prior to the injury) to be a major determining factor in this year's success (which will undoubtedly be a major determining factor in our ability to retain Hayward).

While it's true that limiting his playing time this year could slow/delay his overall development, the potential affect that doing so could have on the team's long-term outlook is far less than that of losing Hayward for nothing in return (assuming this doesn't completely derail Exum's ability to reach his potential which, in that case, likely means he was unlikely to ever do so in the first place).

Hill was not brought in to be the team's long-term starting PG, he was brought in to help the team win now, act as a mentor, allow the team to bring Exum along slowly, & ensure that there is a starting caliber PG on the roster regardless of Exum's ability to return at 100% & remain healthy for the entire season.
