What's new

"but I'm fully recovered now."

This quote and the fact that franklin is now down on the Jazz are my only takeaways from this thread so far.

I'm in the group that still thinks Exum will help our team win.

he can for sure help our team win without ever turning into a star. Was Matt Harpring a star? No, but he did help to win quite a few games for the Jazz

How many of those guys didn't play competitive basketball games for an entire year prior to coming over?

None? I dunno, they were someone else's (poor) comparisons to Exum.

I'm curious... Why do you think Exum chose not to "play competitive basketball games for an entire year prior to coming over?"

None of those guys were as bad as Exum, and besides Dray it is not even close.

............ PER
stockton... 13.3
dirk....... 12.8
nash....... 10.8
dray........ 7.1
dante....... 5.7

Exum literally did nothing all season long. We can only hope that was by choice and not because he just can't. There have been only six 1500+ minutes and sub-6 PER seasons put up by any player in the history of the NBA, and two of those belong to Jason Collins.

Exum will still be one year younger than Stockton, Nash and Green were their rookie years this upcoming season. So not this season but the next, let see what his PER is.

How would Jazz fans react to having Stockton right out of High School?

No reason to defend Exum anymore, the kid is going to be good. His floor is George Hill/Shaun Livingston. Go ahead and jump on the band wagon now or be embarrassed later for being wrong, it doesn't bother me which one people choose.

Okay, here are all 60 NBA seasons played by a teenager who got over 800 minutes:

57 of them put up a PER above the so-called "replacement value" of 8.0, including Shaun Livingston (10.4). Three didn't come close: Exum, Tskitishvili, and Rashad Vaughn. Exum only managed HALF of what Livingston did as a teenage rookie. The point is, even compared to players the same age and experience level, Exum sucked. Sorry, it's true.

Hopefully Exum will pull his head out of his arse and play better going forward. But it seems like the odds are stacked against that happening.

PER also doesn't really measure defense, which is where Exum stood out.

With a defensive rating of 109 and the Jazz better defensively with him off the floor with their two best units? They were much better with Trey in their top starting 5 defensive rotation than with Exum. It's too bad 82games.com deletes stats every year so I couldn't throw them up one more time.

How long are you going to comfort yourself with this Exum is good at teh defense blankie?

If you go by DRPM, he was roughly neutral on defense. So compared to his poor offense, defense was where he stood out.

I'm not saying he was a great defensive player, but I think he did pretty well, all things considered. He has a lot to improve though to even be an ok starter.

It's pretty obvious Exum sucked. He stood in the corner doing nothing all year. He might develop into a very nice player, but he showed very little his rookie year.

You're saying Trey Burke is a better defensive player than Exum ?? Seriously ??

This.
Bottom line.

Besides fat D and a breakout sophomore SL game.

How many of them had a record as a starter comparable to Exum? How many of them were the top defender at their position at 19 years old? Just because he didnt put up offensive numbers doesnt mean he sucked. He ran plays, got the ball up the court, played excellent defense, took the open 3 point shots to make defenders stay on him and not sag off and deferred to better players on offense and got the ball into their hands. His IQ and general decision making was excellent for a player his age. Yes, he could have tried to drive more, yes he could have shot more. But those would have lead to less wins. Exum will expand his game slowly and surely. He showed that he can drive before the injury. It was pretty obvious on offense he was just trying to run the plays and get the ball into better players hands. He did the things he was good at while working on the rest of his game off the court. He will have plenty of new things to show off in the future. He does not need to pull his head out of his ***, he needs to keep playing smart and working hard like he has and will.
