What's new

Because Trey Lyles...

Doesn't play defense. But, somehow never gets the Kanter hate is beyond me. He seems like he has a huge upside it we need to hold him accountable for his poor defense.

A) He's not a bitch

B) He has range unlike Kanter

C) He's not a bitch

D) His game is far more well rounded than Kanter's is, ie he can actually pass the basketball

E) He's not a bitch

People didn't start getting on Kanter en masse for not playing D until the the beginning of this third year when it seemed apparent he was willing to do nothing on the court other than shoot, rebound and set moving screens.

Lyles came together so quickly last year on offense that people are willing to overlook his other shortcomings. I think he'll be OK - he's a typical kid in that he doesn't play defense so much as he waits to play offense. Burks was the same way when he came in the league. Lyle's will never be a stopper but he won't be a liability either.

Regardless if I think they're comparable in terms of their skillsets(strengths/weaknesses), I think Kanter's handler has as much of an understanding of perception as Putin respects the opinions of others.

I think the fans in Oklahoma like him despite their management being strongarmed by Portland into paying him more than the role they had in mind of him short team usually nets - Usually fans blame the player and his representative for being greedy when their favorite team's management make decisions that seem questionable from the outside, for the reason that players are more interchangable unless they're franchise cornerstones.
His popularity in OKC has in my opinion a lot to do with his close association to Adams, who's a very approachable and comes across very authentic.

And until his representation vented against Quin Snyder, Kanter still had ppl who tolerated the criticism since they questioned the skills of Ty Corbin.

He's a 3 folks. He doesn't play like a big man. That would alleviate the pressure on his paint defense.

Lyles would be a far greater defensive liability covering the 3 versus the 4, so you solve nothing with this move. Durant, LeBron, George, Carmelo, Giannis, Iguodala, Batum, Crowder, Wiggins, Gallinari, Ariza, Barnes, Harris, Parsons, Aminu, Gay, etc.

He might not hurt you as much against scrubs, but I think we're expecting him to be able to be in the rotation against the other team's best players.

I personally think he would be great at the 3. Hopefully he will improve his defense. But, right now our second unit of big guys is lacking defense. I'm afraid Favors or GoBert are always going to have to accompany Diaw or Lyles.

Are there any teams in the league with a better defensive group of bigs than the jazz?
In other words, are there any teams who don't have any bigs who are weak defenders?

Lyles doesn't suck as bad as kanter did on defense.

Also, Kanters offense is not great either. He holds the ball too long and doesn't stretch the floor.

Lyles is going to be one of the toughest covers because of his shooting and the pump fake drive. He flys past people which will collapse defenses and open up a lot for his teammates.

I want to see what he does when someone puts a big wing on him or plays him with a SF... to take the next step he needs to be able to bully those guys.

Putting Lyles at the 3 feels like that diminishes his value. His value is stretching out bigs. His value is being able to take bigs to the rim. It's like when some writer suggested Porzingis play the 3 last year, it just doesn't make sense.

Lyles can create efficient opportunities on offense that Kanter could not. The ability to be a threat from deep and also create from deep with his drive and kicks, hitting cutters, etc are a lot more valuable than Kanter being able to bully into a post score and grab a few offensive rebounds. This is if you consider them equally bad defensively (which I actually do not)

How many teams do you think would now select Lyles ahead of Booker.

I am glad we have Lyles.

This is a weird comment to make. I mean I'm glad we have Lyles too but there's not many 2-guard prospects that teams would want more than Booker. True star potential and I think still 19.
