1985 NBA Lottery Rigging

I just stumbled upon this video... its pretty damning stuff. The way the guy discreetly slams the Knicks envelope against the walls of the container... some serious slight of hand going on here.

If you go to the actual youtube page and read the information section the guy breaks it down at each important time-frame.

Indeed, like a well performed magic trick. I don't think it's rigged every year, but when there is a chance to help out the struggling big market franchises Stern will intervene. The last likely rig was in 2008 when Chicago got Rose. Chicago had been spinning its wheels for a decade post Jordan, and Stern had enough, and decided to turn that 1.7% chance into 100%.

Watching this video redirected me to watching 2 hours worth of 2002 WCF series-related videos on youtube today. What a travesty the NBA can be at times, there are few things mroe aggravating to me than seeing David Stern's smug face dodging questions in interviews. Kings won that series.

Meh I think it is a bunch of crap. The guys commentary presupposes a lot. I do not see Stern "straightening" the bent corner no matter how many times I watched the 49 second mark. Yes the guy did bump the envelop against the side but I sincerely doubt that he meant to do it. Also, I love in the commentary when the guy says that the material of the knicks envelope was made of flimsier material. How does he know that? This also requires the correct envelope to be somewhere near the top. If it were buried and he couldn't see the very very slightly bent corner what then? If they were that determined to get the knicks the first pick would they have left it that much up to chance?

I think the NBA conspiracy theories are all a bunch of garbage.

I just dont get why he would randomly fling that one envelope.. and only that one.. against the wall of the container

You are seeing or assuming intent where I am seeing chance. From what I saw of the video the envelopes kind of stuck together. They didn't slide easily from the stack, and it took 2 full revolutions of that thing for them to break up. I think he just mis-handled that one at random.

I wont go as far to say the lottery has ever been rigged, but game 6 was with out a doubt consciously called in the lakers favor.

I'm calling it right now. The jazz will move back 2 spots on the nets pick.

You're really going out on a limb there calling something that has a 35% chance of happening (@6th). With a 74.4% chance of being 6th or 7th, I'd hate to hear the miserable "Jazz 7th" called. Ooh the humanity. What terrible luck.

I would love to have you guide me right through the dealer's stack at the roulette wheel.

Well, they also have a 25% chance of moving into the top-3 if they stay at #12 and NJ holds at #6. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, I say. Works for marriage;-)

If Stern was going to rig the pick wouldn't he have done something a little bit more elaborate than bending the corner of an envelope?

It's the NBA Lottery - not a game of Old Maid.
