Trey Lyles' last 5 games --

* 20 MPG
* 10.2 PPG
* 4.2 RPG
* 41% FG%
* 55% 3-pt% (11/20 on 4 attempts per game)
* 80% FT%

Edit: Lyles' career eff. FG% is .491

Small sample, but it shows some improvement being made. He needs to figure out where he's going to score inside the 3-pt line and get reps to improve his FG%. This should also improve as his minutes stabilize and the line-ups become more consistent. He also needs to gain strength and become more focused and efficient going to the boards. As a 21 year-old second-year player, he's showing potential. Within a year or two, he could become an 18/8 player with close to a 40% 3-pt. percentage.

I'm a bit more optimistic about Lyles than I am with Exum right now.

Now I'm curious, how many PFs put up 18/8 with a 37% 3pt percentage?

The answer is not many. The players in that ball park would include...

Current Players:
Kristaps Porzingis
Jabari Parker (if he'll rebound more)
Draymond Green (during his best 3-pt shooting season)
Danilo Gallinari (though he doesn't play PF often or rebound that much)

Past Players:
Lamar Odom (during his best 3-pt shooting seasons)
Rashard Lewis (during his best 3-pt shooting seasons)
Detlef Schrempf (during his best 3-pt shooting seasons)
Derrick Coleman (during his best 3-pt shooting seasons)

Edit: You can throw in the best seasons of Keith Van Horn in New Jersey, fwiw.

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but the potential is there.

Lol. Im WAY more optimistic about lyles than X.

I think Lyles should have been getting more minutes lately.

He's looked better. He needs to just play and stop thinking. Just fire **** up there and ball. Quin needs to give him rope too.

He's trying hard on defense and even showed some aggressiveness on the defensive glass. When he shoots I'm no longer cringing so there is that too.

I guess the skeptic would say that he needs to prove he can do this playing against starters instead of other teams' 2nd units, but he's shown flashes of performing at this level against starters on teams like Houston and Toronto.

I think a lot of it is just physical maturity on defense. It's hard for a 21 year-old to get in there and bang with PFs and Cs. That's one of those things that can take care of itself with time and natural development.

He'll increase it some but it will always be a weakness for him imo.

As I look at similar players from the past, I see similarities between Lyles' developing game and Detlef Schrempf.

No Dirk?

I think Lyles is likely to be a good offensive player in this league, but he will be limited by his defense and toughness. He plays much smaller than he is and is really soft inside the paint.

I've seen strides made by Lyles defensively. He still sucks but he definitely seems improved. Gives me hope for the future.

That's why I only dare to compare him to Detlef Schrempf at this stage. Lyles doesn't seem have the same natural warrior mentality that Favors does (when he's healthy). Maybe it's because he's Canadian and Canadians are really nice people.

Steals and blocks aren't everything on D, but Lyles has slightly increased both his block and steal numbers per 36 mins, and reduced his fouls/36 at the same time. Not great numbers or huge changes, but trending in the right direction, indicating improved focus and effort.
