Exum: Missed Call or Proper No-Call?

I've been waiting for this site to get updated to show play from the last two weeks. Dante has driven several times into contact and gotten no-calls, many of which I thought on first viewing to be correct no-calls but others disagreed. I will post all the plays (that I can remember) so we can get a better look on replays and see why Dante is not getting the call.

I believe this is kind of a good example of a lot of Dante's drives. He goes hard and gets good elevation, but right when he is going into a defenders body he tries to greatly change his shot instead of trying to go through the defender and forcing more contact. On this play KAT maintains pretty good verticality for most the of the time him and Dante are in contact. As Dante changes his shot KAT does move his arm, but because Dante adjusted mid-air, KAT's arm largely avoids any contact with Dante. I believe if Dante just goes up and tries to go through his arms, he gets a call on this play.

Really good verticality by Kanter on this one. Exum tries to adjust in mid-air again instead of finishing through and forcing more contact.

Another weird play by Dante IMO. He beats Kanter and has a clear path to the glass for a relatively easy finish. He turns that corner with more of a purpose and he is drawing more body contact and getting that and-1 off the glass, but instead he goes up at a bad angle and bails on the finish before he can get to the glass. Should a foul have been called? I'm not sure on this one, but I am sure if Dante goes to the glass with more of a purpose then he gets the foul and the finish.

Anyways those were the 3 plays I remember there being a discussion about whether Dante got boned by the refs or were legitimate no calls. I'm interested to hear what others think from these replays.

It's clear to me once Dante gets some more strength and more comfort back in his knee he will be really good around the rim on finishes and drawing contact. Biggest thing he needs to do is really go up strong and not go 90% of the way on his takes, and I'm guessing most of that indecision comes from the surgery.

EDIT: Since the links dont work here is the website link: https://beta.3ball.io/plays/exum

1st play I talked about is titled: "MISS Exum 2' Driving Layup" it comes against the Wolves in the latest match agains t them.

2nd play is titled: "MISS Exum 2' Driving Layup" it comes against the most recent Thunder game in the 2nd quarter with 8:04 left.

3rd play is titled: "Kanter BLOCK (1 BLK), MISS Exum 1' Driving Layup" it comes in the most recent thunder game in the 2nd quarter with 6:22 left.

That website is working just fine for me but for some reason all of those links never load.

doesn't load for me either ,but i remember the plays ...the last tenth of a second Dante does try to avoid when if he drove through all the way I think he'd get at least half the calls .Refs are going to make Dante force them to make the call. But because I know and see Exum make the drive with authority I'm still very happy to see that.I think he'll be finishing with authority by next year.Refs will look at him different and so will fans.

I updated the OP with titles and timestamps for the plays I talked about so you can go into the website and find them instead of following the links that dont work.

This website is so temperamental for me. The latest games I get to show up is February 25th games. I cant see anything after the Bucks Jazz game. I tried on different browsers, computers and cleared my cache and everything else for this site. I would like to look at these, I guess ill wait and see later.

Okay, I think I finally got the clips and watched them.

I think adjusting your shot to avoid being blocked is a good move but refs struggle to make calls surrounding Exum, kind of like they did with Gobert previously. The one against KAT is a foul and should have been called. KAT does try to go up but he is moving towards him and makes a lot of body contact. If that was Harden or even Hayward that would have been called. Hopefully Exum gets a little stronger and can finish that shot in the next couple years and starts to get calls and that is an easy and-1.

The second one against Kanter is even more of a foul. Not only is there body contact he gets hit across the arms. At least the one against Kat his arms are not hit (which is probably where the refs are watching) and Kat goes up more vertical. Kanter hits him on the arms, body and is not going straight up.

The third one Exum needs to go up stronger towards the rim not fading away on the far side. This is a decent no call although a lot of players would get this call still.

Exum needs to get stronger, which he will. He is still young. He also just needs to get respect from the refs and somewhat from opposing players. I think players tend to body him up and bump him in the air knowing he will probably miss and they have a decent chance of getting away with it. Overall I like that he avoids getting blocked and always tries to finish his shot. I dislike players that just try and draw the foul and throw their arms up and dont try and finish. AK was the worst at that.

2nd was a clear foul he got robbed on, 1st should have been called but I do see the refs letting that play go sometimes, the third is Exums fault and he did not get robbed by the refs but a lot of players get that call. Exum gets no respect from the refs in general but I think it is more because he is so long and skinny that it is hard for the refs to call his plays right offensively and defensively.

I just rewatched the clips of Exum from the Rockets game. He got the short end of a couple bad calls. The foul on Lou Williams at the 3 point line is terrible. The ref seems like he called it just because of Lou throwing up the shot. It was also a bad call when Exum was backing up and Lou through up a shot that Exum didnt touch him on except some body contact that was light and Lou initiated it while Exum was backing up. Exum also got fouled hard across his arm on a pass attempt (although he drove in and jumped without a place to pass to, so it was a bad move) that was not called and then Exum correctly fouled him right away to prevent a fast break. Some of those defensive fouls are really hard on Exum to get playing time and momentum. I did like Exum getting upset at the foul call and Exum getting upset with himself on the bad foul where he jumped into Lou. So 3 of his 4 fouls were questionable. That is what got him benched for the rest of the game.

I cant tell on his first turnover if he was trying to make a good pass to Gobert and over threw him or if he was making a really bad decision pass to Hayward and under threw him or didnt see the defender.

Quality is not great but here you go #1

Not sure this was worth the effort but these should work.
