2011 Draft Blog
The basketball world was buzzing like a hornets’ nest this afternoon as some unlikely college stars decided to make their returns to campus and a POY candidate took his talents to the NBA. The 2011 Draft was supposed to be filled with one-and-done players that may not be ready, but were set to declare anyway. The potential for an NBA lockout was not supposed to scare these kids due to agent loans and the way checks are disbursed to rookies they would not really lose out on any money. Instead, up is down and down is somewhere across the road to the left.


Here is what we found out today:
  • Harrison Barnes of North Carolina is on his way back to campus. This decision is not a
    shock, but anytime a potential Top 5 pick makes the choice to return to campus
    in is news worthy. Barnes was the consensus top pick to begin the season and
    after early struggles worked his way back to the top of most big boards. North
    Carolina welcomes back not only Barnes; they also have Tyler Zeller and John
    Henson coming back to campus next year too. It will be interesting to see where
    Barnes is ranked as a sophomore verse where he was as a freshman.
  • In most people’s eyes Kemba Walker was the Player of the Year, now he is the
    former Connecticut star as he has entered his name into the NBA Draft. Walker
    is a diminutive guard, but plays the game with elite pace and confidence making
    him a highly touted prospect. After his incredible junior season that was
    capped off by winning the National Championship, Walker had nothing else to
    prove at the college level.
  • The shock of all shocks came from a prospect that was suspended at the end of the
    season and decided to come back to Baylor for a sophomore season. Perry Jones is a
    lock for a Top 5 pick; many believe is the guy with the most potential of
    anyone in the NBA Draft and made the most peculiar decision of anyone. Now
    Baylor may have arguably the most athletic team in the Nation and a
    team loaded with numerous future first round picks.
What nobody is talking about is the fact that all these decisions that are making fans and owners in Cleveland and Utah cringe, are building the 2012 Draft up to be one of the best in a very long time. The formal 2012 Draft Preview with the prospects to know will come out this summer, till now here is this list:


Top returning:
Incoming freshman:

  • Anthony Davis – Kentucky PF
  • Quincy Miller – Baylor SF
  • Michael Gilchrist – Kentucky SF
  • James McAdoo – North Carolina PF
  • Adonis Thomas – Memphis SF
  • Bradley Neal – Florida SG
  • Austin Rivers – Duke G
  • LeBryan Nash – Oklahoma State F
  • Marquis Teague – Kentucky PG
  • Myck Kabongo – Texas PG
Add in a few International Prospects and you have the makings for a great 2012 NBA Draft class. The Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Clippers are both scouting like mad men, both have two potential lottery picks for 2012.

Looks like a deeper draft class next year. Lets hope we can continue our rebuild with success.

Or let's trade all our picks this year to try to get a few in next year's draft. Picks 1 and 3 next year would rock.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong here, now I know there's a lot of indications that Harrison Barnes will be returning to UNC (thank you Scott Van Pelt), but he hasn't actually confirmed he's returning, right?
 
We need to go after Myck Kabongo but only for 2 reasons:

1) His name can be said all in one word....Myckabongo
2) To hear what inane crap Boler and Harp can come up with for this guy. "Ka-bang Kabongo bangs down the 3!"

Congo lines and bongs are fun. Nice combo guard there.

2012 first round draft pick from Golden State
Golden State's own 2012 1st round pick to Utah via New Jersey (top 7 protected in the 2012 Draft, top 7 protected in 2013, and top 6 protected in the 2014 Draft). However, if Utah via New Jersey has not yet received this first round pick by the 2014 draft, then Utah via New Jersey shall instead receive: (i) Golden State's own 2014 2nd round pick and (ii) Golden State's own 2016 2nd round pick. [Golden State - New Jersey, 7/22/2008 and amended 9/21/2009 and then New Jersey - Utah, 2/23/2011]

I can't get excited about the 2012 because there is no guarantee that all those players will declare next year. Besides I have heard a rumor that the NBA owners are pushing to require that players play two of college ball before entering the draft. If this is the case then the 2012 is what I thought the 2011 would be (at its best).

The incoming freshman that impressed me were Davis, Rivers, Neal, Teague, and Gilchrist. I would love having Gilchrist as our starting SF and Hayward as our starting SG.

Gilchrist is going to be an amazing defensive player at SF. I'm a big fan of his. Not a big fan of Teague, but it is too early to tell. Rivers will need to develop some more PG skills but he should be a good one, Davis is a freak and for the life of me I can't remember who Neal is....

This last year was the most difficult to watch/follow. There was just a ton of terrible basketball played this year in the college ranks, with all the players returning next year should be a lot more fun to follow.

Top 7 protected next year? Ewww. GS will probably be around 12-16 next year anyways with their squad.

We should have demanded NJ's pick next year.

I think there's rules against trading away consecutive first round picks. I'm sure someone else can confirm.
