It appears we have rented a player for a year at the cost of the 12th player in the first round. The thought occurs what if he had held on to Trey Burke, drafted someone with the first round pick, and let the point guard fall to Trey, Raul, X and Shelvin. The draft pick could or could not have amounted to something. Plus I'm not sure of the long term prognosis of Burks or Hill.

With Hayward's FA coming up this offseason the front office had to make some win-now moves and I'm happy they did even at the expense of our 12th round pick. Eventually you have to start bringing in guys who help you win today instead of in 3-4 years.

I'm hoping Hayward is all in. I was just looking at the 33 regular reason games Hill missed and the playoff games as well. I realize we can't predict what Trey, Raul, Shelvin or X would have done as the man, or whether or not they would have gotten hurt but I have a really bad feeling about the Rent a Hill.

Who exactly would we have drafted that would have made the team better last season? And who would you want to have on the roster for the next 3 years that was available at #12 in the draft? I don't see anyone who would have helped us take the step that we did this year. I understand fully that George Hill may be a 1 year rental, but it was a GREAT payout for that year in spite of the injuries. Our team as a whole took 3 steps forward IMHO. Joe Johnson and George Hill helped lead that charge. Any rookies we would have picked up were meh at best.

The only guy that I would want now looking back is Murray who went late in the first. Dennis Lindsey tried to buy the pick late in the first, but no one was selling. So, if we had made that happen we would have had Murray and either Mack or Neto would have not been with the team this year.

How about Wade Baldwin IV? He would have been there:
On June 23, 2016, Baldwin was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 17th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft[6] and joined the Grizzlies for the 2016 NBA Summer League.[7] On July 16, 2016, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Grizzlies.[8] He made his debut for the Grizzlies in their season opener on October 26, recording seven points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks in 24 minutes off the bench in a 102–98 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.[9] On December 6, he recorded his first double-digit scoring game with 11 points in the Grizzlies' 96–91 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.[10] Baldwin made his debut in NBA playoffs on 15 April 2017, contributing two rebounds and one assist in seven minutes off the bench in a 82–111 Game 1 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.[11] During his rookie season, Baldwin has had multiple assignments with the Iowa Energy, the Grizzlies' D-League affiliate.[12]

True. Hill was an important factor in beating the Clippers. He also helped our regular season record. The team as a whole took a big step forward this year, including Hayward and Gobert's continued improvement, and Hill helped make that possible. If Hill and the Jazz part ways, there are no hard feelings either way. Now the Jazz know what they have and what they don't have and can make the next step to improve the team. We should be top 3 in the west next year.

The best player we could have taken at 12 in retrospect was probably Skal Labissiere, or perhaps Dejounte Murray. The Jazz didn't miss out on much. This upcoming draft looks better overall.

Skal Labissiere and Dejounte Murray could have likely been acquired through a trade up if the Jazz had been willing to pay some future assets and cash. Bet that the 76ers would have listened for both of their two late picks.

My bigger issue was that the Jazz didn't hold out for a later first round pick (#20 or #21) coming back. At the time of the deal, I felt like Utah was giving up the best pick, but getting back the 2nd best player. Hill was a great pickup, but he was older than Teague and hadn't earned comparable accolades. I know that it was widely viewed as a weak draft, but I felt that it wa strong in the 20-30 range WITHOUT Labissiere or Murray slipping that low.

His defense concerned me, but the spurs turned him into a good defender. I hate the spurs. They draft and improve players over and over again, while the Jazz...

Yeah, I was just thinking about how I wish we could have been the 8th seed and swept in the 1st round. Not to mention that Hayward's hair is starting to bug me. Wish we had tried harder to lose him for nothing.
