Here are my fast typing notes:
Snyder expected them to struggle to start the season.
They have been almost epicly inconsistent on offense.
They expected to struggle a bit losing their two best offensive players but losing JJ (who he views as a starter level player and great on offense) and Exum hurt a lot as well.
He thought Exum will really fill the void of losing some players and fit into how the team was evolving.
The new they would have to be great on defense. They have scratched that surface but have not quite hit great defense yet.
They had to change their plan going into the season due to personal change.
They are still learning about the group.
He said they were below average last year forcing turnovers, partially due to choice but that this season they wanted to force more turnovers.
They are undergoing another evolution on the defensive end right now. (I think he meant because Rudy is out)
Pace has been all the rage in the league and thats what they tried to do at first. They realized they had to do things different having Gobert, Kanter, Favors and Booker. He thought their offense was bad and they played slow and they were trying to pick up the pace. People helped him look at it analytically and saw they can have a good offense and play slow. He compared our team to a football team with a good defense that runs the ball well and grind them down. The way teams play is a product of the personnel.
They didnt try to replace Hayward they looked to change their scheme.
They took more mid range shots last year because that was what defenses where giving them and they had good players like Hill and Hayward that could hit those shots.
He said you dont abandon a system prematurely. But they did loose a great player and it would have to change but they would have to see what they had on the court to evolve.
They started the season turning the ball over like crazy and have been switching things up to solve that. They have to be a low turnover team but that is hard because they dont have connectivity and that will take time.
Mitchell and Hood are the most aggressive offensive players but they are very different from Hayward.
Dennis intelligence and analytics are going to really help them going forward and helping recover form losing Hayward and that he includes Snyder in that thought process and Snyder trusts him to build a roster.
They struggled before to figure things out with their roster and got through it and they are having to go through it again. Snyder said he has to adapt with the personnel and he will but it takes time.
He can think long term based on the Jazz system and security. Which is what they are thinking of.
He loves the veterans DL has brought in. He mentioned about Booker, Diaw, JJ and Hill. JJ has quiet confidence that has really helped the team and his ability to close games. Diaw helped the team be less selfish. Jonas offers energy and being positive has been helpful.
The team is really positive but it has been tempered a bit lately.
They are trying to win as much as possible. Snyder talked to Spoelstra and he encouraged him. They both have the idea that winning culture is important and to always be trying to win. They have gone through it before to get to where they were and will again.
Mitchell is very competitive. He has a huge desire to improve and he has the tools with natural talent. Inteligence, desire and the tools, he has them all. Udoh also had those things. Hoods development is coming along and is important to the team. Snyder forces players to be honest with themselves to help them improve. He doesnt just view young players as needing development. Older players can develop and need to as well.
He doesnt feel like it was a big setback this offseason with their long term goals.
He was/is excited about Hood and his development. Credited DL for being great at finding guys in the draft.
They want to embrace the challenge and the team is on board with that.
The offense is going to be up and down for awhile but he expects the defense to be elite every night. That is something they can control. Missing shots on offense makes it harder to get back and defend and that compounds for the team. He thinks they are building mental resilience when the offense struggles. The defense needs to lead to offense. That is not happening right now. They are struggling to convert off turnovers/big stops but expects that to get better.
Everyones pace is the same after timeouts or dead balls. The difference in pace with teams is how quickly you score after the other team misses. Because of their personnel and they haven't had an engine to drive the pace in those situations. So they try to maximize their efficiency in various situations. But they need to push the pace in full court situations. They wont change their pace after makes though.
Players perception of a good shot is different but he wants them to shoot when its a good shot. They are faster this year but the league is even faster. But they are not pushing the pace well yet in terms of efficiency.
They take pride in developing players. DL trusts Snyder to develop guys and he trusts DL to get him players with the tools to be developed. They take some pride in players getting big offers even if it hurts to see them leave. Such as Booker and Hayward. He talked more about how much he liked Booker and he was one of his favorite players. He loved his energy and even enjoyed some of his smack talk. Booker use to have to wait to come out of the game to talk to Snyder but now can yell at him all game and does. He was proud of the offer and role Booker got because of his development in Utah.
Igor has known each other for a long time and they both believe part of development is playing and winning. Part of developing is learning to make winning plays. Exum is a great example and its unfortunate he is out but that is why he is back and forth with playing time and reinforcing good habits. Exum has built mental toughness through the process he has gone through. SNyder talked about Exum a few times and sounded very positive and bummed about his injury. Its been a little difficult to keep Exums spirits up and it effects the group. The team had to really step up because their disappointment spread but again he said that Exum is really tough. Snyder said he has been really tough on him but in a fair way but Exum might not agree with that always but Snyder is proud of him. He is coaching him not to be good but great. Exum knows how much Snyder likes and respects him. He has had to be direct and tough on him. He has every expectation that he will come back better. Exum is intelligence high character guy and is has developed toughness and mental fortitude. It was really hard on him and the team because Exum went through it once and it was hard and he came out better and was ready to go and it happened again. Exum is determined.
He felt really bad about Hayward going down and they had no hard feelings towards Hayward and appreciated what he gave the team and what he helped shape the team. He wants the best for Hayward and they all felt really bad and they all reached out to him after the injury. He reached out to him after going to Boston and after the injury.
