Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

The thing is that the player has to assume the team will play this perfectly. As in - if he deserves his salary or more - they will pick the option, if he doesn't they will decline. Thus, Mirotic only has downside to NOP having the option to pick up his second year. Thus, he wants the year guaranteed.

Right or if he gets hurt they have insurance. This is why I thought there was value in him being able to block trades... Many of the teams that wanted him also want salary relief.

So riddle me this, why isn't NO just having Chicago pick up his option and invalidate his say-so in the deal?

Because options are of course very valuable for whoever holds them. What if Mirotic gets hurt? What if he doesn't mesh well with the team? What if they have a better way to use their money? What if they decide to pick up everything and head in another direction? Flexibility is important and New Orleans may be leaning without that flexibility.

If he gets hurt they are stuck with his salary and next year if they bring Boogie back then he is a backup.

NO is operating under short term principles... last year they waived Omri Casspi when they could have kept him on the books because he was out for a few weeks... they picked up some 10 day guys who never helped.

They should fire their GM today and get someone that isn't fearful of losing his job. They need to be going the other way.

My first instinct is to agree, but I think they're kind of in a similar place the Jazz were last summer, but subbing out Hayward for AD. They probably feel like they really have to make the playoffs this year if they are going to keep him interested in staying around.

There's probably a better use of a first-round pick if that's the case. I mean hell send them Rodney Hood for their first.

Joe Johnson for Asik and a 1st. Problem solved. I've been talking about this trade (or Favors) for a while. Johnson makes more sense if they need shooting.

Asik's deal is essentially up after next year (only $3 million guaranteed in 19/20) and with the stretch provision it can be stretched easily. It isn't that cancerous to give up a 1st alone to be off it.
