Following Potential 2018 Draftees

Okobo looks clearly better than Khyri Thomas and De'anthony Melton. I'd put him ahead of Troy Brown too. He's easily a top-20 prospect who must be a bit off the radar. Now I'm afraid the Spurs are going to take him.

If we drafted someone like Troy Brown over Okobo I'd lose it.

So we draft Okobo, and let Exum walk.

We now have a cheaper player who can shoot the 3, run the offense as good or better than Exum, and isn't a defensive liability?
I can see the attraction to this scenario. mmm.....

Okobo looks sensational on highlights. I have a couple full games of his lined up and I'm gonna watch them tomorrow probably, but there is a chance he ranks pretty high for me(as in top 10 high). I had not been paying much attention to him until this week.

Why let Exum walk though? We’re trying to improve, not tread water.

Good point. I still like Exum. This could save us some money to resign Favors, and another potential FA.

I guess the question too is if we draft Okobo does that sway Dante to not want to come back? Does he not want to compete against now two quality 1s for playtime?

I guess you could say that we could use the "dante money" to resign Favors, and or another player. If you believe Okobo can give us more than Dante.

Assets could be used elsewhere.

It's not a question of do we want him back, but will he want to resign with us?

It doesn't really matter what Dante wants. He's a restricted free agent so he doesn't have much choice in the matter, we can match any offer he receives and keep him regardless of weather he wants to be here or not.

I know. The question is if we drafted Okobo would that lessen the chance we match a bigger offer from another team? It gives us more of a choice.
I'm all for keeping Exum, but if we do I don't want to draft Okobo.

We need to draft someone that will be a rotation player, and help this team. Not just be a nice security blanket on the bench.

Drafting Okobo in my eyes would just open a new path way with different possibilities.

There is no big offer for Exum.

The worst case scenario is he takes the QO and is a UFA in a year.

Not wanting Okobo if we retain Dante long term doesn't really make sense. They can both play together. You draft BPA, especially when both guys have positional length.

This draft pick must be used on a player who will see the floor. If we retain Dante, I don't see much time for Okobo in the next two years. Unless we make other moves.

We are on the verge of becoming a contender. With so many good possibilities there for us in the draft I want a rotation player from this draft.

With Dante coming back I don't see enough time for Okobo.

This is bad thinking on two levels.

1. No reason Okobo and Dante both can't play together. Your misguided philosophy is the reason the Nuggets didn't draft Donovan Mitchell. Its a silly thing to say. Even if the Jazz keep Exum, that still only leaves them with 3 guards under contract. They will likely sign a guard in free agency if they don't draft one.
2. The pick doesn't have to be a rotation player from Day 1. You are drafting BPA, not who can make an immediate impact. The Jazz will likely be returning the vast majority of their main rotation and will probably fill the rest with the MLE in free agency. The idea that getting a day 1 rotation piece is a must is silly talk.

Lets step back a bit. First off I'm not completely against any idea, especially yours. I'm trying to find the best scenario for us in the next 2-3year window.
We have made the giant leap into a top team in the NBA. Now comes the hard part. Taking that next step.

If we add Okobo, we lose out on Huerter, KBD, Robinson, etc. It's a big decision, and a critical time(if we are serious about being a contender in the next 3 years)

1. I never said they can't play together. I alluded to the very legitimate fact that playing time might be hard to come by for Okobo if we retain Exum. If we draft
Okobo I want him playing, and a part of the rotation(doesnt have to be at the start of the season). If we keep Exum, and draft Okobo then we'll have to get creative to free up that time. It's possible, I'm not against that, but is that the best decision(drafting Okobo and resigning Exum) we can make out of this draft?

2. If we resign a guard in FA we'll have drafted another player. Both paths have merit, and I'm trying to figure out which path is best for us.

3. The player doesn't have to be a rotation from day 1 no, but debating whether we want more of a project over a guy who can come in and help us next year is not silly talk. It's real talk *************.

The best path is drafting the best player available and re-signing Exum.

These are mutually exclusive things. Who you draft has 0 effect on if you sign Exum. Exum guards 1-3 at a near elite level and still has upside at 22. There is no scenario where I choose to not sign him beyond him getting a ridiculous offer which isn't going to happen with the current market.

The reality is whoever you draft is going to most likely struggle to get consistent minutes.

Fair enough. The question should be,

Is Okobo better than Robinson, Huerter, Diop, etc....
