Following Potential 2018 Draftees

The really non-athletic players don't often do the athletic testing at the Combine at all. Luke Kennard skipped it last year. Several guys, including Trae Young, skipped it this year. Kevin Knox's vertical might not be that special. He's more fluid than explosive. He didn't do the athletic testing.

Troy Brown can get by guys by getting low and using dribble moves. Joe Johnson sticks his butt in your face and backs you down.

Show me highlights of him getting by anyone. Literally every highlight I saw he basically could only get next to a defender, and then always stopped short for some jab, pivot type move, or floater or something. He never finished at the rim whether it be for a dunk or layup.

That is a very interesting question. The data wouldn't be perfect because of the guys who didn't test, but there should be enough of a sample size of guys who did test. I wish the guys on 1280 would ask Dennis Lindsey on Friday.

That would be cool if that could get asked. I bet FO guys have that info in some way shape or form.

For example, I would be very interested to see a breakdown of success for guys with a longer wingspan to height ratio. Or if guys with faster times actually stay in the league longer. Seems like a spreadsheet could be compiled and then a line set aside for "years in the league" and another one for "minutes played".

Maybe they would then, but 15 to 19 doesnt really sound like that big of a difference. They would have to have a concrete plan of action where they knew they needed that extra 4 million to make the deal make sense.

17M more over a 4 year deal may be the difference in landing Jabari. Not sure of any other FAs in that boat. The could also stretch AB if they thought they could get Gordon or Capela (not sure they’d want him). It puts them in a position to get in those conversations... not sure if they’d rather just wait.

Did you see what stitches posted? He was bottom 3 at small forward for every athletic test. Also, I completely disagree with Huerter having less of a downhill game. Watch his highlights. He can actually go by a guy much better than Brown and finish. And toughness? These kids are 19 ad playing basketball, not football. I'm not sure how one really measures that or can say that. Your concern on KBP is legit but his athletic testing measured out well.

Brown reminds me of an older Joe Jesus. Like he drives but can't really drive by anyone anymore so he stops and pivots, etc. Except this kid isn't going to be able to play the 4. Can he?
He's definitely longer than Joe Johnson. He was a pretty good rebounder in college and has enough length to eventually be a 4.

Yeah, I just found an old DX article. Joe Jesus was 6-6 3/4 without shoes and had a 6'9" wingspan. It doesn't mention standing reach. 6'10.25" is certainly better. Not a ton better but better.

I just don't think I'd feel comfortable with him at 21. 26 sure, not 21.

Perrin mentioned they might be willing to get a high potential developmental prospect who might spend time in the G-league and we would be looking to develop him to be a contributor in 2-3 years rather than right away. IMO you have to draft him at 21 or thereabout. I doubt he lasts much past that. Too intriguing.

I would like to see a study done on guys in this range that are big swings that pan out... seems mistakes happen in this range because teams go for too much upside.

He moves well but that dribble was so casual... I know it’s just a drill but that’s the type of thing that could make his other stuff useless.

I also think some of these guys that are so far away and skip development steps (like playing in college or Europe) never really get some of the basic fundamentals needed... like going from algebra to advanced calculus and trying to fill in the gaps rather than building on them.

I just don’t feel good about him.

@Saint Cy of JFC

Why is Evans dropping?

I'd assume because he's not great at any one thing and doesn't stand out as special in some way.

I think this time of year guys like evans drop because they are just good basketball players and not guys that do cool flashy **** in workouts (like Simons, Smith, Walker). Some of these workouts are counter productive if too much weight is placed on them.

I don't know. I'm no shot doctor and I really cannot pinpoint what the problem is(maybe it's just in my head because of me knowing he's not been great shooting the ball in college). I just don't feel like it's going in when he launches it. Like for example when Huerter shoots I feel like it's going in every time, it looks smooth and seamless and compact.

I see it too... not quite a hitch but like a weird shift in the motion... like its a 2-3 step process and one of the steps isn't lined up or timed right.

He seems incredibly fluid AND might actually be explosive in addition to being smooth.

I'm more impressed with the Okobo footage they posted and the production. He looks like he might have a decent wingspan... anyone seen a reliable measurement. I think Okobo has a higher ceiling and floor than Simons and that Simons is riding mystery hype.

Both The Stepien and NBADraft.net report him to have a 6-8 wingspan. Some sources say he's 6'2, others say 6'3.

You deflected from my point. The discussion when I made my comment was around waiting 2 years for a player to emerge. And even with Hayward, my statement still rings true - "A majority of teams don't care about the length of the project as long as the project is worth it."

We took Hayward because we knew he could become a good NBA player. We took him over guys with shorter ceilings but who were more NBA ready right away.
Hayward was NBA ready from the start lmao. He dropped a 34 point game his rookie year.

1000% in... the arms look long so that matches the eye test. He's also looks pretty thick (in a good way). I like my guards like Cy likes his women.

I like Okobo 100 times more than Simons.
