2018 Draft Trade Idea

No, I'm not trolling. Simmons was **** in SA and then he put up very modest stats on one of the worst teams in the NBA.

You are giving Orlando a more talented player and the 21st pick (not to mention you threw in another pick when Orlando is already making out like thieves) so the Jazz can save 6 million? FOH

You have the meeting with PG then clear cap. This is dumb as hell and not a single damn person has endorsed this so don't act like I'm trolling.

Simmons is better than Burks and you are a moron for thinking differently. Burks, even if he was solid, does not have the support of the coaching staff. He had a ton of DNP last year for a reason. He only played in the playoffs because Rubio and Exum were out and we are thin on the wing (which is why we need Simmons).

The trade is about getting better for next year. There are 50 guys you have featured in the prospect thread, most will flop. We have a better chance of finding a gem in the vet workout the other day than #21. I like a few prospects, but most are pie in the sky.

I love our current core and I want to add another gritty, athletic, defensive minded proven pro to throw at the west playoffs.

Simmons is so much better than Burks and we might find a better player at #35 than #21. The PG stuff is window dressing. Read the posts.

And I'm not shocked anybody publicly endorsed the trade because everybody is enamored with the draft. Its that time of year and everybody has their fingers crossed we are drafting DM part 2.

I'm not offended. I don't make trade ideas for validation. I do it for conversation. And as I have said, this trade doesn't make sense if our FO has their eye on a particular prospect. However, this deal is brilliant if we don't have one guy we love but we have like 5 who we like.

Its about getting better. Simmons is better than Burks and likely better than what #21 will provide.

Not with his defense. He would be a crowd favorite just like he was when he was with San Antonio averaging 17ppg as the starter on a playoff team.

Considering how unlucky we are come playoff time due to injuries, having another elite level perimeter defender and guy who can score at times would be nice to have. His last 5 games this season he scored 25, 24, 10, 35 and 13.

The Jazz could get a player 10x as good as Simmons with the 21st pick by either drafting or trading for someone with actual talent, like Jeremy Lamb.

For his career Simmons is -1.6 OBPM and -.3 DBPM. He is a career negative on both sides of the ball and he turns 29 this year. He doesn't add anything to the Jazz that they don't already get out of Jae or Royce.

Simmons was absolute garbage his last year for the Spurs until that playoff series. That doesn't make him a good player. Solomon Hill did that too.

10x better? The guy is a fantastic perimeter defender and can score. He is better than Lamb much so how is that awful suggestion 10x better? You are reaching for small statistical reasons to knock the guy. He was a late bloomer. What are his stats for last years playoffs through now? And compare his stats to Burks. Stats don't tell the whole story anyway.

Simmons is a win now move if we don't have a certain prospect to pursue. He is a good player. If we don't bring back Favors, we have plenty of minutes for him, O'Neale and Exum in the 2nd unit. Our depth is that much better.

You just want to knock this idea because you want to knock me.

Everyone is knocking this idea....

This would be the most depressing "win now" moves in the history of "win now" moves.

Simmons is not what the Jazz need at all. You are throwing away the future for something that has the same chance at making the team worse as it does making them better.

And started in the playoffs for the Spurs and averaged 17ppg.

Look Cy, you cry all you want about Simmons but the guy can play. Most importantly, he plays hard, he plays D and he attacks the rim. If Crowder moves into the starting PF role, we need a guy in the 2nd unit who we can count on. We need layers of perimeter defenders to knock off GS.

This move is about making us better for sure instead of relying on a draft pick.

And you really don't think the 21st pick can do better than a replacement level player who the Spurs didn't want to pay 6 million a year after seeing him up close for two years?

He left the Spurs because he wanted more playing time after Manu decided to come back. The Spurs wanted him back but he went after a better chance to prove himself and make a little more money. He had to go out and prove himself and he did this year.

Go ask an expert about how well Simmons would fit in our team. I honestly want to know what they say.

In my opinion, Simmons, Exum and O'Neale are a freaking handful and one of the best, most athletic 2nd units in the entire league. And just imagine the switchable defensive lineups for the playoffs.

No move is perfect. You give up some to gain some. When we got Hill for a pick in the teens, there were pros and cons but DL still did it. When we traded a 1st for Rubio, it came with some risk.

#1 Simmons isn't a perfect player, but he can play especially on D.

#2 there is a chance that #35 is just as good as #21.

#3 I like the idea of having an extra $5.5 to spend on a free agent or to gain another asset.

#4 I like that we have an option on Simmons for 2019. If he fits, we have another absolute bargain like Crowder. We also could let him go if we need the space.

He was a restricted free agent. They didn't want him back that badly.

He hardly proved himself. He was a below average PER player on one of the worst teams.

Good Morning Jazz fans; the off-season has officially begun. Now that we are lucky enough to have Mitchell mania, every off-season is even more important to get quality to build. After much sifting, I think I found the type of trade DL would pursue. He has targeted a proven vet over draft picks numerous times in recent years. This trade can lead to other initiatives. Please bear with the long post, but if you can, you will see the logic:

Step 1 - Burks, #21, and #52 for Jonathon Simmons and #35 http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yblf6tbm (this trade saves us $5.5 plus the rookie salary for next season). Orlando's new FO wants to rebuild, and #21 is more important than Simmons. We need a vet more than a project. At #35, we draft KBD, Okogie, Carter, best player available.

Step 2 - meet with PG first thing on July 1. If he will consider us, we have to renounce Thabo (7/1 deadline).

Step 3 - Sign Exum to no more than $7 year one. RFA can be signed after 7/1 before the moratorium lifts on 7/6.

Step 4A- if PG is still interested, we renounce Favors, Neto, Jerekbo and Udoh. We also look to trade Bradley (we could try to do this around the draft).

Without Favors' hold, Jerekbo, Udoh, Neto and Bradley, we would have these contracts for 2018/19:
Gobert $23.5
Rubio $15
Ingles $13
Crowder $7.3
Exum $7
Simmons $6
Mitchell $3.1
O'Neale $1.4
TOTAL: $76.3

The most PG can get from a team (not OKC) is around $30. The projected 2018/19 salary cap is around $102. So, we could offer PG around $27. If the cap spikes, like some say might happen, we could give him more.

Step 4B - If PG isn't interested (most likely scenario), we keep Udoh, Jerekbo and Bradley. We even look to re-sign Favors to a two year deal.

The age of our team is crucial because I think the Mitchell experience will come in two waves. The first wave will be succeeding with the guys we have and the 2nd wave will be bringing in guys to continue that success. To me, this plan maximizes the current roster which has some guys already in their prime (with or without PG). In the future, we hope Mitchell can recruit the big fish because of the success provided by wave 1.

Probable Roster
PG Rubio, Exum
SG Mitchell, Simmons
SF Ingles, O'Neale
PF Favors/Crowder, Jerekbo
C Gobert, Bradley, Udoh
#35
This roster is built to throw a number of athletic, switchable defenders at the GS and Houston types. Our depth would be stronger than ever.

And if we could add PG to it at a hair under the max, just wow.
