Donovan Mitchell on JJ Reddick podcast

Very good podcast... here are some highlights:
Highlights:

  • He loves the laid back peaceful and tranquil atmosphere of Utah, he loves that the arena is sold out every night.
  • He loves that the organization cares - from the person who makes their food to the owners
  • Redick asked him about NBA cities he doesn't like... he said Philly and Boston upload_2018-6-21_14-24-34.gif also... Minny cuz of the cold.
  • "Do you hold grudges against teams that didn't draft you?" "Not all 12"
  • he would have liked playing for MJ's team and picking his brain
  • all the travel is done so starting this coming week, it's all work again...
  • wants to use his 'fame' for positive things... set good example for his sister. Can't do stupid things on twitter and instagram, etc.
  • sweatshirt was Adidas idea and they had talked before... but when Ben said what he said... he thought "this is perfect"
  • happy that his peers voted him ROY... would be happy to win the analysts one but "if not, they are not the ones who have to guard me every night"
  • first time we played vs OKC, Westbrook got him on a pumpfake and Donovan told him "good move" and Westbrook looked at him funny and said "who the **** are you talking to?" He said it's come a long way since that moment and Russ talking to him after the last game vs OKC telling him he respects his game and to keep killing people.
  • he had doubts all season until January-February that people would adjust to him and start stopping him. It was when we had the 10 win streak he finally stopped doubting himself.
  • Trevor Ariza had his number all year
  • CP3s trickery is annoying "there's gonna be a day I'm gonna get him a technical foul and it's gonna be the happiest day in my life" upload_2018-6-21_14-24-34.gif
  • His mom made him miss an AAU game because he didn't do his homework. Thinks it was important for his mom to make him realize he has to do his work done not just on court but off-court too. Plans on finishing his degree...
  • Wants to be example for kids. Said there was a time he met an NBA player when he was a kid and he didn't give him his autograph. Says this is why anything that involves a kid, he's there for it.
  • Year two expectations - first, wants to go past round 2 of the playoffs... HOU series allowed him to see his weaknesses at the highest level - needs to be better passer, TO down, better defense... better shape - being great on both sides takes its toll, midrange game. "Gotta find the midrange at some point"
  • A lot of his success is the confidence of his teammates have in him to take all those shots.
  • The Philly game(3/21) the individual matchup got the best of him.
  • "Every bit of it" (*the success) was surprising.
  • "I'm not at year two, i want to be like it's year 4... " Said watching KD get the ball in Cleveland in the finals there was an "Oh ****, here we go" vibe in the arena. He said he wants to get to that level when there is fear in opponents when he gets the ball.

Love Donovan’s attitude.
I really like that he wants to be feared when he has the ball such as Kobe and Jordan had. Sky’s the limit for him.
All in all a really good interview. Worth the listen.. be careful though if at work.

One other thing he noted was how he likes/appreciates fans in Utah letting him have his privacy. He said, and I'm paraphrasing, "How he could go take a walk and folks will take a picture of him, but won't follow him three blocks." He also liked how friendly everyone was and beautiful the state and city were.

Love the occasional precision F- and S-strikes he dropped. Dude's human and I don't think anyone is ever going to begrudge him that.
 
Man NBA players really don’t like Utah. The first thing he has to do is say why it’s not so bad. Damn Reddick.

Yeah lol, I really don't think people have as much of a problem with it as people think. He drops it on his IG story pretty often. He can be who he is. As for fans, yeah, I think if you see the dude it's fine to ask for a picture or talk to him, but there's no reason to over-bother him. He's asked all day here I'm sure.
 
He's a very refreshingly honest interviewee. There was this part where he was like "I dont think I have imposter's syndrome" and JJ was like "nah bro u do, that thing you mentioned earlier is an example of it-- don't worry, every person at the top of their craft deals with it" and he just totally internalized it.

I dunno-- just hearing something like that was cool. This kid puts the truth, puts his potential, and puts "what's right" above everything. A master-class of parenting with this dude, he just has such a good foundation to carry onwards for the rest of his career. The sort of athlete the NBA needs. I hope he never gets any serious injuries.
 
The Utah Jazz has never had a better ambassador. It's almost as if the collective wishes of Jazz nation created him.

Next year's Jazz shrine needs to feature Donovans mom as the Holy Mother.
