Anyone think we might buy a couple extra 1st rounders?

I think if we don't trade up and get Cousins I say we take Udoh. I don't like Aldrich, no potential, not very athletic, but is tough. Not a fan of Monroe, not tough, doesn't block shots but would fit well with the Jazz O. I like Udoh cause he is a athletic big who has a great wingspan and has potential unlike Monroe and Aldrich.

I say take Udoh if he falls. Then buy maybe 2 or 3 extra picks. Here are some of the guys I think they could get in mid to late first round if they got a couple other picks
1. Larry Sanders- 6 11 222. He is compared to Theo Ratliff. Freakish athleticism and wingspan. Has a lot of potential and very hard worker, finishes with force.I have a feeling he goes to OKC which scares me.

2. Daniel Orton- 6 10 270. Only averaged 3 and 3 but was behind Cousins. Has a great NBA body, another great athlete and is said can excell in pick and roll play, compared to Haywood. Great timing, great potential and is a strong post player.

3. Hassan Whiteside- 7 227. Compared to Camby and Tyson Chandler. Averaged almost 6 blocks a game, great rebounder, has pretty good shooting range. Has great potential but had a horrible interview, doesn't work too hard and may take a while to be ready for the NBA. He would be a risky pick

4. Quincy Pondexter- 6 7 215. Very athletic wing with great strength and very strong in transition play. With his athletic skills he could be a great matchup problem. Great slasher and works very hard and competes on the defensive end. 20ppg 7 rebounds

5. Stanley Robinson- 6 8 225 15 ppg 8 boards. Compared to Gerald Wallace. Great rebounder for his size, great athletic ability and most importantly excellent man to man defender. We may lose Korver or matthews so this would be a great pick up in a late first round pick.

Buying first round picks does not seem to happen too often. My idea would be if Jazz are not excited about who is available at #9 trade down to get a later first round pick and a very early second round that has no guaranteed money involved.

Buying late 1st-rounders with guranteed contracts? With the Jazz already well over the tax threshold?
Ummm, Utah "cut" Eric Maynor (and Ronnie Brewer) to SAVE money. I didn't agree with trading Brewer - I thought the Jazz could have used the depth. But I understand that move; they weren't going to offer Ronnie a 5-6 yr deal in the MLE range. But to cut a very good backup PG, the best we've had in years, at an incredibly cheap price for at least 4 years? Dumb, dumb, dumb!!!

Sloan had to overplay Deron after the Maynor deal. How many times did the Jazz lose leads when Price or Gaines came in? Maynor could have started when Deron hurt his wrist and given the Jazz a chance to win while Williams healed.

So no, there is ZERO chance the Jazz would keep the 9th and try to buy another late 1st from another team.

Maynor was no better than Price or Gaines. I am not upset they traded him in the slightest.

The jazz won't buy picks it's not their style. Far too aggressive for them.

ok well then what about trading down if Udoh isn't there and maybe get 2 first round picks or 1 first rounder and a couple 2nd rounders. tell me that those guys I listed down don't get you excited- Athletic and defense which we need to beat the Lakers!

So Maynor was worth the 12 million trading him netted the Jazz last year?

Deron also didn't average that many minutes. I don't think he was even near the top 20 in minutes played or minutes per game.

I wouldn't be upset at buying a late round pick, provided it comes cheaper than the max 3 million.

No, Maynor was worth $2M per year for 4 seasons. That was his contract.

Harpring was only costing the Jazz the luxury tax and a minimum in salary. The rest was covered by insurance. Greg and KOC panicked. They took the 1st deal they could get that saved money. When you have a sunk cost, you live with it. You don't trade good talent away.

Deron played the 6th most minutes per game of all guards. And we know that for the last 2 months he did so woth a hurt wrist, one that never fully healed. Maynor >>> Price or Gaines. Not even close. Maynor is a PG. He can handle the ball and pass. Price and Gaines are both under-sized SG's, albeit with one problem: neither can shoot. Oh, I take that back, they can and DO shoot; they just can't "make."

;) oh dear chap you are so wrong there.
How so? A shoot 1st PG that did not run the offense and was a much worse defender than Price and not any better at shooting. I am not a Price fan either, I think he should be cut, but Maynor was not better than him and was not worth the 12M dollars the Jazz saved for the trade they made. Maynor would not have changed this teams outcome and it saved the team a boat load of money.

Or maybe they are a fiscally responsible small market team. It's not like they have been selling their picks...not even once to my recollection (and several other smaller market teams have).

They sold the Maynor pick for tax saving's. It was after the fact but came to the same thing. I'm not begrudging them being smart with their money. But buying draft picks is too aggressive for them for whatever reason, so my point stands.

Fair point on Maynor, I'll concede that. But, they are aggressive when there's somebody they like and they have the ammunition to make a deal. That's how they got D-Will. Buying draft picks is a pretty rare practice by any team in the league regardless.

I would call the DWill trade desperation more than anything. That's the only time they have shown that they would be willing to move up to go get who they want in the early part of the draft.

Easy to say when it's someone else's money.

Are they supposed to trade up every season? When you pick where the Jazz pick usually it's pretty hard to make a move. I'm not saying that I'm always pleased by their lack of aggressiveness by any means, but you've also got to understand the position they are in and the constraints they are under. They aren't really in a position to make aggressive moves in the draft all of the time.

Buying draft picks that arent in the top 15 will be a waste. This draft is pretty weak down the stretch.

There could be some guys that fall into the late teens that are definitely going to pan out in the NBA. Four to five million for the first year is a lot to spend for that type of pick, though.
