Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Paying $12m to one of, if not the best, backup 5's in the league is definitely something a contender does...if they can afford it. Especially when you have a starting 5 who has missed 20-25 games in two of the past three years. 12/8 in 28 mins is pretty good, considering he isn't featured in the offense. He gets half his mins backing up Gobert and spot starting when Rudy is hurt.

I don't get this at all. I thought he was great until the statistics were shown over and over again about how Gobert took an awful team and made them better when he came back from injury. In other words, we didn't play like we wanted to play with Favors as our 5. I would bet that our defense ran more normally when Udoh was at the 5. Regardless, every single stat said we were amazing with Gobert and awful without him.

If the Lakers strike out on Cousins, Favors is the type player the Lakers would sign on some massive one year deal like they did last year with KCP and Lopez. The other option would be Atlanta where I think he fits great.

Other than that, he has us. We just don't need to overpay.
Lakers have no reason to. They own their pick, correct? So without Lebron or Kawhi, they should just try to get the best lottery pick they can. He's a fit in Atlanta due to being a GA boy. Atlanta drafted Collins last year to play PF. But Collins isn't an outside shooter. Even if Favors played the 5, he'd not be a good combo with Collins.

Washington needs a big since they traded Gortat. The Pels will need a big if they lose Cousins. The Bucks need a big. These would all have to be sign-and-trades though. Favors is probably the next starting-caliber big on the market.

There is a part of me that also wants to resign Favors and offer the MLE or something to Jabari, just so we could teabag the Lakers. LBJ didn't have dinner with Magic, and they've already struck out elsewhere.

Pretty boring so far, tbh.

LeBron to Philly or LA, or DeMarcus to LA would be pretty wild, as would any major developments with the Jazz. Otherwise, nothing else has really tickled the pickle.

I think they go after someone like Tyreke Evans or Zach Lavine with big money before overpaying a boring old big like Favors.

Team was bad on defense but it is scheme based. We funnel everything into Gobert... who then scares the eff out of everybody. Favs would do better ina switching scheme but teams don’t change the defenses they run generally... he also likely shared the floor more with Johnson and Hood who were just awful.

The biggest thing for me is Favs is the best FA asset we can get if he’s on a long term deal. Can move him during the season and it is much easier.

Did you also factor in that Gobert was hurt when Utah had that horrible December schedule? Of course the Jazz were amazing when Gobert came back. They gain a starter and don't have to have Favors cover for Gobert and a backup play in Favors' place and Udoh get a ton of minutes at the backup 5. That's just common sense that getting a starter back is going to make the team much better. And on top of that, Utah had a >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>easier schedule. December was absolutely brutal. Even with Gobert, I'll bet the Jazz don't win more than 2-3 games over what they did that month. Udoh was a novelty; he can block shots. But he's absolutely horrible on the offensive end. Jazz won't miss him at all if he's released (except for his off court stuff). He's not an NBA rotation player.

Oh yeah. we also had an emerging player in Mitchell who got better as the season went along. That had a little something to do with Utah being better in Jan-April over Oct-Dec. Favors is a damn good player, but it's amazing how selective some of you can be in trying to support the preconceived notion that Favs sucks. It's like Locke: reach a conclusion first, then find evidence to support that conclusion. Don't consider, or toss out anything that contradicts the conclusion you've already made.

Fortunately Dennis and Quin disagree. Lindsey has said since Day 1 that re-signing Derrick is a priority.

The Lakers keep losing out on free agents because they suck. They have too much "potential" to try to tank for their draft pick. They need to build a winning culture to lure a big fish. I fully expect them to try to win this year so they can sell KD, Klay others on LA next summer.

Thabo is a money-ball player. Good vet, good team guy, good defender, adequate rotation player, cheap deal. He can play important minutes in the playoffs without rocking the boat and demanding more minutes and touches.

Jazz would probably keep Thabo and lose Jerebko.
Looking at some of the deals that are coming together, I’m actually feeling like Thabo, Jonas and Ekpe are all great values. Better to not screw up the cap with bad deals when we’ve already got 3 great ones as insurance already in Utah. Bring them back, look at trades at the deadline and then let them expire after this season.
