2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

Latest news from Memphis is that Gasol and Conley have had a meeting with their owner and that trades are impending.

Latest news from Washington is that the Wizards do not want to get future assets and cap relief for Otto Porter. They want to continue to contend for playoffs...

With those in mind... here's my idea for a trade:

It's a bit complicated. Brace yourselves!

UTA trades 2 1st round picks, Dante Exum, Derrick Favors, Thabo Sefolosha, Ricky Rubio
UTA gets Mike Conley, Otto Porter

MEM trades Marc Gasol, Mike Conley
MEM gets 2 1st round picks from the Jazz(put whatever protection would make sense), Ian Mahinmi, Derrick Favors, Dante Exum

WAS trades Otto Porter, Ian Mahinmi
WAS gets Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio, Thabo Sefolosha

Why for UTA: Utah replaces 2 starters by 2 players that better fit the roster. In essence this is an admission by the Jazz that they are not likely to get anyone better in free agency than those two and decision to use the capspace on those 2 players. Starting lineup of Conley-Mitchell-Ingles-Porter-Gobert gives a great balance between offense/shooting and defense.

Why for MEM: they decide to finally break up their aging duo and start over by getting a young guard in Exum, and 2 1st round picks, Derrick Favors can also be flipped for more if they decide they wouldn't want to keep him past this year

Why for WAS: The latest news is that they don't want to trade Porter for future assets and they want to continue to contend. This one gives them a better center than they've had recently and a starter at the PG while Wall returns. They also get depth at the wing in Sefolosha. All those are win now pieces. Clearing Ian Mahinmi is just welcome a bonus

Thoughts?

I like it. I think it's very very fair as well and makes sense for everybody. But also crazy complex and will never happen lol.

As a jazz fan it's high risk and high reward imo and it could bite us in the ***. I would do it though.

Interesting thoughts fellas. I just have to ask the following questions:

#1 - Since Memphis keeps their first rounder if they are in the bottom 8, why would they trade Gasol and Conley to get Porter? Shouldn't they be trading those vets for draft/young assets?

#2 - If Washington doesn't want picks and assets for Porter and they want to contend now, why would they trade Porter? Wouldn't it make more sense for Washington to send Mahinmi, Morris, Tony Brown/1st for Gasol?

#3 - I'm more and more wary of Conley as I see Donovan play some PG. Either Exum or Rubio with Mitchell and we should be fine at PG.

Answer to your first question. Porter is still young I think. (Not sure though). Help with a quick rebuild in a city that would probably be impatient.
Answer to question 2. Gasol is an up grade overall to their and makes them more legitimate contenders. Probably shorter and cheaper contract as well (not sure though)

I just looked at the trade again. Memphis doesn't even get Porter so you were mistaken there. They get expiring favors so they have more money in the off season. Jazz get Porter.

Sorry I was looking at the 2nd ESPN trade machine one.

Like you said before, that 3 team deal with all those picks, Conley and Gasol is too crazy.

I'm just not sold on Conley. He makes us better but mortgages everything. And I worry about the decline.

If I'm Memphis, I trade Conley to Orlando. They are pleading for a PG and they have a chance to make a run this year. If Orlando thinks they can keep Vucevic long term and are willing to trade Bamba, I do:

Conley for Mozgov, Simmons and Bamba

They shed Conley's deal and get a big to pair with JJJ long term. Mozgov is worthless, but his deal comes off after next year. Simmons is the type guy who Memphis probably gets the most out of. Orlando would be a very good East team with Conley.

This deal along with some kind of trade of Gasol for picks somewhere really sets Memphis up better long term.

I feel lik if the jazz make another trade it will be a small one. My gut says they have a few targets in mind for free agency. I believe the jazz will be a choice destination for the players I believe the jazz are targeting.

I just hope that if the jazz make a trade then Rubio is involved or favors. I think we are better off without Rubio and I think favors is a good player that I would love to keep but I think he is better off elsewhere and the jazz are better off starting a stretch 4 next to gobert.

And we might end up losing both guys for nothing in the off season.

If we don’t make any big splashes in free agency, I’m sure Faves will be back, no clue on Rubio, but I think he should walk, as I want Mitchell at pg next year. If we do make a splash. Faves and Rubio walking allows it to happen, so I disagree

Any chance B-Jelly from the kings is available for trade? The kings have three other young bigs that are very much a part of their future, and I would think he might be on the outside looking in. He was my free agent crush last offseason and would love to have him. Then we focus more on either upgrading pg or on the wing.

Was listening to Andy Larsens on his podcast... said chances of jazz making a trade was 50% and that 35% chance it was a major trade... seemed really high for him. I think we have some things brewing but it will depend on which teams if any become sellers.

If Royce is going to be a 40% 3 point shooter I think having him on the court instead of Rubio makes us better on offense and defense. Im officially ready to be out of the Rubio business but I want to get value for him. If we can’t then he’s back starting which is fine.

We need Exum or Neto back and some help on the second unit. I know many aren’t on the DM should play more at pg bandwagon but it’s working. Look at his numbers and his individual +- in those games... I realize the competition isn’t great but we are murdering the teams... which matters.

I have no doubt the jazz have and are currently engaged in big trade talks, but they will only pull the trigger if they feel it’s a no brainer. Doing that is easier said than done. Most likely scenario is that those discussions lead to a much smaller trade. IMO the jazz feel they can be successful in getting one of their big targets in free agency, so they won’t be willing to pay too much in trades. IMO of course.

My thoughts are that Memphis probably isnt getting enough back. Both those first are going to most likely be in the 20's. Washington probably needs to give something up besides Porter, like Satoransky.

We were murdering teams last year during this period with Rubio. Also murdered a team in the playoffs with Rubio.

We (the front office and fans) need to be honest with ourselves. I don't think we can win the title this year. I don't care if we get Beal, it's going to be hard as hell to even win a game or two off of Golden State.

So what is the best way for us to compete once hopefully GS breaks up this summer? Is it to continue to throw the same product out there or is it get an important asset now for the upcoming years at contention?

I think we need to trade a combination of the huge expirings of Rubio, Favors, and Thabo and even picks to get some piece that helps us over the long term. I don't even know who that is. Do we try to get Bridges from Charlotte? JJJ from Memphis? DSJ from Dallas? Saric or Covington from Minny? Jaylen Brown from Boston? Winslow from Miami? Russell from Brooklyn? Harris from LA?

Heard that New Orleans will prioritize keeping Randle over Mirotic and they believe they will only be able to keep one. Also said that Mirotic isnt well-liked by his teammates.

Doesn't seem like Mirotic would be good for a locker room. Gets punched in the face in Chicago and now his Pelican teammates can't stand him. No thanks
