2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

For the record, I’m not really interested in pursuing Conley. I think he certainly makes this team better but the return on investment (what it would take to get him + his actual salary + his age + I think Donovan should be playing more “1”, etc) is quite poor.

Exactly... to all of it.

If we need Rubio and/or Favors for a trade deadline deal and yet we love them so much, why not just try to re-sign them in the summer?

Sure we wouldn't have them for this playoffs, but we could re-sign Rubio or Favors using the MLE.

Besides that they would feel unappreciated and burned by the Jazz? And that making the MLE is their worst-case scenario? And that they’d be much more likely to be in that worst-case scenario because the Jazz traded them? And that the Jazz wouldn’t have an MLE to use if they’re operating under the cap?

No reason, I guess.

I think we can get in on some side action of the Conley deal... most of the teams I could see making a push for him would have stuff we'd want maybe more than Memphis. We have the flexibility and can throw a pick in the deal.

Like if Minny sent Saric/Dieng/Teague and a pick for Conley... Memphis likely doesn't care much for Saric... we add a pick and some salary clearing if necessary to facilitate a deal. The table scraps may be more appealing to me than the dinner.

We overpaid Favors this summer. A more fair contract going forward would be the almost $9 million or so the full MLE would give him. We could even give it for a few years which gives him long term security.

If they can get over getting traded for the betterment of the franchise AND they love it here so much, I think they could get over it. With them plus trade targets, we could be a better contender.

Everybody is looking at Mirotic/Randle in case the Pels decide to rebuild after they lose AD(seems like he's injured and they will be out of the playoff picture this year)... It's not Mirotic we should be after. It should be Jrue Holiday. One of the best fitting guards for our system and our roster. He's like a souped up version of what George Hill was for us(when not healing his toe).

I agree about Jrue, but NOLA would trade Mirotic or Randle because they might walk this summer. Jrue is still a guy they can keep to build around AD. If they trade him before the deadline, might as well trade AD too.

Yes. The issue is they haven't and won't give up on AD yet. Demps wants to keep his job, so folding is a no go. The ownership is clueless and disinterested. So I think they are more likely to double down on staying in the picture. Maybe the injury changes things for them. If Holiday was available I'd love it. Similar to Conley as a two way player with on and off ball value but younger and bigger so basically ideal fit next to DM. They won't move him until they move AD imo.

The Jazz could only offer a maximum of approximately $4.6 million a year in that circumstance using the room exception (teams operating with cap space are not given a full MLE to use http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q25). And that’s the TOTAL they could spend in free agency after using their cap (with exception to minimum contracts).

Even with the haters and dreamers, no one here thinks Rubio or Favors are getting signed for that little.

I’m not sure you understand. We can’t use that valuable space and keep Favs and Rubio... it’s an either or. DL set things up for flexibility and will make an addition now if the opportunity presents itself. It’s unlikely because trades and transactions are somewhat rare by nature.

He may not want to dip into the additional assets, Allen, picks, Exum?, etc. but he’d put Favs and Rubio on the table for the right addition now.
I fully understand the situation at hand. I think you misunderstood my post. I was stating that Dennis won't bring in someone that takes up the cap space we have this offseason and in addition, he's not going to give up what he perceives to be valuable pieces to this year's team while losing that cap space going forward.

I disagree that Dennis Lindsey would make an addition now. I think sights are set on a big time free agent with the floor being Khris Middleton or Tobias Harris. I don't think Dennis will bring on an Otto Porter or Mike Conley and risk losing the chance to sign someone better for the Jazz in the offseason.

I'm acting under the premise that we would be over the cap because of pre-deadline trades. If we are over the cap, we could give Favors or Rubio just over $9 million this summer.

They’re not doing that until after they give up on AD (and after they trade him), but I would go in to get both Holiday and Mirotic.

I would also go in for Aaron Gordon and Evan Fournier.

Both moves effectively remove the Jazz from doing anything substantial with cap space for probably a decade, but I think either solidifies the roster.
