2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I might actually agree here... the timeline wasn't great and I'm still on team DM is a pg more than a sg.

Go get more wing creation and help and a stretch 4... someone younger please.

I just thought we'd have a move up our sleeve.

Doesnt Jabari fit that description?

And yes, Chris Wallace is an idiot. He will never get a better offer for Conley than the offers he got at this deadline. I don't know why he thinks he's going to get a better offer around the draft. Who in the bluest of blue hells is going to pay his ridiculous asking price for a 32 year old PG making 30+ million a year when there will be so many younger, cheaper options available to teams in the draft, free agency and on the trade market when teams have more financial flexibility??? He's so dumb. I hope they end up giving him away for peanuts.

Yes... though someone will give him a pick as long as conley is healthy.

I really think they want to reverse tank so they give the Celtics a late lotto pick in a bad draft rather than a higher pick in a future draft. That obligation sucks if you are doing a rebuild.

I don't think they are dumb for holding Conley out. Deals will be easier at the draft for them.
Debatable. The expirings they want won't be available during the draft (assuming that was something they wanted). There's a better potential to get draft picks as GMs get loosey-goosey with 'em. That said, I genuinely doubt they see a better overall deal.

He's getting re-signed this summer. The Jazz won't have any better option to use that money on. And they can't just let him walk for nothing. Same goes for Favors. The team now is the team next year.

Yep. I can't see any viable upgrades for either of them. There's also a chance we could even have Rubio walk - unlikely but possible.

Exum looked good bofore the ankle, but he had some seriously rough games this year as well.
To most people Exum looking good means something like 5-10 from the field for 13 points and 4 assists in 22 minutes.

Which I guess does look pretty good in comparison to our other point guards tbh.

Sounds like the Conley price was crazy. It also never seemed like Memphis was really going to move him. Note that Marc Gasol had stopped traveling with the team, cleared out his locker, etc., while Conley had continued playing games.

Hard to be disappointed because I'm not sure what other deal would have been made. We also traded for Korver a quarter through the season, so not as if we've sat pat.

Ricky has limits as a player and I hate him on the court sometimes, but there's no denying he's super wholesome and a happy guy to have around. I hope that we upgrade in the off-season and the separation is more amicable than a trade would have been now.

Although Conley said he would play anywhere, and that the rumor he didn't want to come here was BS.

Yup. He wouldn't have added the "I have no idea where that came from" if was his dad/agent who did leak it. He would have left it at "I'll play anywhere."

All I can say... Dante better be good when he gets back... the Exum Hive versus the Exum Haters could get even worse.

Debatable. The expirings they want won't be available during the draft (assuming that was something they wanted). There's a better potential to get draft picks as GMs get loosey-goosey with 'em. That said, I genuinely doubt they see a better overall deal.
Memphis ain't spending in a couple of years so I don't think expirings are that important. They just traded for Jonas.

The only way for Utah to become contenders is to trade the farm (sans rudy/donovan) + draft picks for a star, a la OKC with PG. Free agents AREN'T going to come here, yet there are so many on this board that believe we need financial flexibility for the summer lmao. To sign who? The Thabos, Udohs, and Niangs of the league? There are THIRTEEN other NBA teams that have similar / better cap space than we do going into the summer, yet this board is so disillusioned to think that we have a shot at top shelf FAs.... SMH

Agreed. Utah IS NOT a major free agent destination. While we may be able to sign the (end of career) Joe Johnson's or Epke Udoh's of the world, we will not sign any major star in free agency. Nor are we likely to draft them on any consistent basis (getting Rudy and Donovon where we did was an anomaly, not something to be counted on in perpetuity, more likely we end up with someone like Grayson Allen). Outside getting lucky in the draft, the ONLY way we're going to get a major, difference making star is to trade for him, which means we have to be collecting assets to make such a trade desirable for a potential partner.

Exum, for example, should be viewed as an asset we can leverage to get someone better--a potential difference maker--as opposed to an indispensable member of our core. He's not a difference maker, but he's an asset we can potentially use to get one. We have no comparative advantage getting FA's in the offseason, but we could create a comparative advantage to get one via trade. That's why I'm disillusioned by another trade deadline come and gone and . . . . nothing.

This season is not very fun as a Jazz fan. It is literally the same team as last year, which we know is not good enough. I was hopeful at the deadline we would do something, anything, to shake it up and make it interesting... but it didn't happen.

Good luck to the team this year, but I am out, I am going to find a better way to spend my time & money. See ya in playoffs or draft... whichever one the Jazz are involved with next.

this thread is a constant eye-roll right now. People complaining about missed deals, yet not offereing any real scenarios where the Jazz could have/should have gotten a certain player. And the notion that the Jazz didn't talk to every single team is also moronic. Frankly, Conley is a non-all-star getting paid $30 Mil a year and more for 2 more years after this. We dont' need that. We need our third guy to go with Gobert and Mitchell and I do NOT see who that is that's available. I would love a guy like Beal, or Lillard, or whatever, but guess what, they aren't gettable.

I'm also dying laughing about the people saying we are not getting enough for expirings. Who's giving us assets for our expirings?

The Jazz have made trades most of the deadlines lately and in the summer and apparently they're doing nothing. "Not for stars though...just role players." Mmmkay, who is the team that will trade us their stars for our role players or bad late round picks. Take a break and go outside people. The blinders and hate are killing you...

Because Chris Wallace is an idiot. Waiting all the way to the deadline for someone to flinch and getting nothing in return. Conley's value will not go up, especially if an injury happens. And we got screwed cause they waited all this long, giving us no time to execute a plan B (we couldn't bc we don't have many assets besides our expirings and 1st, which were on the table for Conley)

God. I’m so sick of hearing “so and so screwed is and didn’t let us get to plan B”.

No, they didn’t. You just suck at being a GM.

So dramatic

Oh... I'm pretty sure that's what most probaly will happen.
However, the fact remains that front offices should be accountable. Small market teams (and Utah more than anyone else) need to be careful and effective which I think, broadly speaking, they have been not. Not always thought this way, but now I do.

Yep, the Utah Jazz are a disaster organization top to bottom. Really an embarrassment to the league.
