What's new

Following Potential Draftees - 2019 (not kidding)

The player who I have ranked highest over consensus right now is Jaxson Hayes on Texas. I think he could actually be a top5 or even top3 pick..

His player comparison is Marcus Camby.. I'd consider taking him over RJ...

I'm buying the rumors that he's still growing too.. I've read all there is to read on this topic and the case of why he's still growing is MUCH stronger than most you'll see.

That kid just has the glow, like bruce leeroy. Hayes has proven enough to me where I throw my hands up and say "you dont bet against guys like that"...

He's clearly like, uh, Rudy Gay levels of athletic and 2" taller...

U watch a Texas game it's like Gobert is out there for them.... Seriously... at the top of opposing teams scouting reports, very first thing, in big bold letters, it's gotta say "dont test Hayes".... He'd average an incredible amount of blocks if tested but they dont test him... there's a very large 'no fly zone' that surrounds him, he's super light on his feet too..

I'm so out of the loop on the draft this year. This will be a year of late, mostly uninformed hot takes.

But here are some updates on upperclassmen I watch regularly that are fringe prospects.

Lamar Peters: Back to being super annoying to watch. No way is he a NBA player until he drastically improves his decision making and finishing on drives. Stock: Down

Terence Davis: Still love this guy. Could be worth a late first in my book. Shooting the ball much better and has improved his combo guard skills that are a necessity as an undersized 2. High stocks % suggest he can make it in the NBA. Stock: Up

Quindary Weatherspoon: Sleeper 2nd rounder for me. His 3pt shooting has returned this year. Needs to shoot it well to be a NBA player. Jack of all trades combo guard with a great frame. Sneaky athletic and plays at a good pace in the picknroll. Stock: Up

Aric Holman: His coach has no idea how to use him properly. I think he's the next Channing Frye. Struggles to guard in space, but can block shots and rebound. Probably needs to bulk up to guard 5s and hold position in the NBA. Stock: Down (slightly)

Kris Wilkes has game. I wouldn't mind drafting him. I like De'Andre Hunter as well but think he's going to get into the lottery.

Also, Romeo Langford would be great for us next to Mitchell. Yeah, he's a lottery pick, yada yada...
He's a terrible fit on Utah, but I do like him. Definitely not someone who the Jazz should trade up for. His development on his jumper is far from guaranteed.

I'm watching Virginia vs Duke. Will be writing down some impressions from the game about the NBA prospects here:

DeAndre Hunter - he looks big! And he plays big. What a defensive stop on Barrett. Great feet and timing on the contest, physical in traffic on the rebound. Looks a bit clunky on offense, but he get his shot off the dribble without much hesitation. His wingspan looks huge when defending on the perimeter. I'd be shocked if it's shorter than 7 feet... looks Kawhi'ish. Hunter is shutting down Barrett on his drives. Very impressive. He's giving him the 3s, but nothing inside. Attacks a switch(Bolden)... doesn't look fast enough, but draws the foul... Not great handle. IMO won't be initiating offense in the NBA, unless he improves the handle a lot. His shot looks nice though. Might be a legit 3 and D prospect. Great defender. Barrett is lighting it up from 3, but that's not sustainable... he's like 6/7 or something insane like this. Barrett is not this type of shooter.

Zion - nothing new, but damn... his explosiveness is impressive - it's apparent in pretty much any facet of the game - on dunks, while rim protecting, while defending on the perimeter... it oozes out of every pore of his body. Has some troubles with double teams so far. Damn, quick recovery and change of direction and steal on the potential backdoor cut. Impressive. Very sloppy game handling the ball. Must have 5-6 TOs so far... doesn't give the ball up when swarmed, cannot beat double team to save his life right now. WOW. WOW! What quickness and explosiveness on the closeout to block a shot from Hunter. WOW!

Barrett - shoots 3 over Hunter, scores. Barrett scores another 3. And another one. Hunter is giving him space for the 3s and he's hitting them so far. I don't think it's a bad strategy against him... but damn... has to be discouraging. 4/4 from 3. WOW. 5/5! Cannot get past Hunter on his drives. Also has problem passing out of a double team.

Reddish - tried going past Jerome on the wing and got shut down. Looked sluggish a bit. It's possible he doesn't have the best first step acceleration. Great length on D shows when he pokes the ball away from Guy. Great attack of the rim in transition. Body control, touch, understanding of angles. Nice. Reddish has skill. Why is he not playing better for DUke this year? He is better than his stats. Should be better. I like his jumpshot better than Barrett's. It looks smooth and effortless. He's hit 4 3s himself. Duke on fire. Needs to be better on D. Guy has drawn 2 consecutive fouls on him. And then follows it with a great block on Hunter - goes to show he has it in him, needs to be more focused. Jerome tried to beat Reddish off the dribble... Reddish shows good feet and shuts him off.

Kyle Guy - looks small... but good feel for the game, great timing on pocket passes. His shot looks real nice. Very smart with his cuts.

(done)

I think Reddish will be the player this year I like more than most people.

Louisville is beating Duke. No ESPN means I can only watch box score.

Is Jordan Nrowa a 2019 draft prospect?

I think we need one of these big wings--Hunter, Hachimura, Okpala or Doumbouya. I'd be happy to end up with the 7th seed. (I think we can beat Denver in 6 games.) Then we'd try to trade our pick and a player to move up several spots into range for one of these wings.

The Jazz get their best talent in the draft. If they want to improve, they need to maximize their draft opportunities.

Hachimura a wing? What are you smoking son?

The other 3, sure, I'd be happy with. Hachimura would be a wasted pick for the Jazz.
