What's new

Bucks at Jazz: 7pm MT

IMO, Superstars are (in no particluar order): Lebron, Durant, Curry, Harden, Giannis, AD, George, Embiid, Leonard, Irving
HM: Westbrook, Thompson, Walker, Lillard
Players on the rise: Jokic, Mitchell, Doncic
Not ranked due to injury: Porzingis (superstar potential)

Gobert is a star, but will never be a superstar due to his offensive limitations. Simmons has superstar potential if he can improve his shooting.

Give a game ball to Snyder for having the guts to bench Gobert and go with Favors. A lot of coaches would never have the cajones to bench someone of Gobert's stature (pun intended).

Westbrook is a superstar.

Superstar is a social thing not a playing basketball thing
So if you have a big presence on social media but you aren't that good at basketball then you can still be an NBA superstar? Ok.

The Jazz have a whole host of players that are fundamentally sound, that when playing together and hitting there open shots can beat anybody (ok, with the exception of the Warriors) are fun to watch and can possibly be in the conference finals if they use there heads!

I don't think that's at all what he's saying. Obviously you have to be good at basketball to become a star in the first place, it's not like the league is out here promoting scrubs, but that's just where it starts. Superstardom begins when a players fame transcends beyond basketball. Rudy Gobert may just just as impactful on the court as someone like Westbrook, but his "star level" isn't going to be the same because he doesn't have the same appeal or marketability for reasons that have nothing to do with basketball.

That's fair. He probably shouldn't say "superstar is not a playing basketball thing".

I don't think Rudy's problem of being a superstar is or ever will be his personality or marketability. His Twitter game is tight. His personality on point. His swagger is legit.
It's his lack of all star appearances and all NBA 1st/2nd team awards that are keeping him from superstardom. Plenty of superstars are not as charismatic or approachable or likable as Rudy gobert. His issue is that while his advanced stats are great his raw box score numbers aren't great enough. Wanna be considered an NBA superstar? Get the advanced stats and raw box score stats and you will achieve superstardom regardless of your social media game or whatever. Tim Duncan is probably the prime example. His personality leaves a lot to be desired but his game screamed superstar and so he was. Stockton was on the dream team not because of his marketability but because of his production on the court.

I think basketball ability and talent is by far the most important part of being labeled an NBA superstar. Image, marketability will follow if you are a superstar level player regardless of what type of marketability you have or social media-ness or whatever. The NBA superstars are the best basketball players in the game.

No, if Gobert was known for his offense as much or more than his defense he’d be at that level and be an allstar, and a little of being in Utah. Look at Hayward. He was finally given the recognition he was looking for the moment he was signed by Boston. Even just before this season he was made to look like a superhero in that animated commercial, that never would’ve happened in Utah. Even Malone got somewhat overshadowed by lesser players during and after his era, and he mad a gazillion time allstar finals appearances and multiple mvp’s, and the second all time scorer in the league ahead of the likes of Jordan Wilt and all of the other elite scorers save one. So don’t tell me Gobert isn’t a superstar because he hasn’t made an allstar team, but he is a top ten player and a star on the court of the highest degree. Superstardom is all about popularity in the eyes of the public. Superstar is being used loosely because none star players are getting paid like stars.

Obviously no one cares about scrubs with one or two exceptions, like Ball, but they don’t usually stand the test of time.
