RetroBreakdown:: Bulls vs. Jazz Game 6 1998 NBA Finals

3 other points:

-The refs (with a little "encouragment" from Sloan) did a great job calling illegal defenses on the Bulls to start the game (3 in the 1st qtr) and that gave Malone and the rest of the Jazz more spacing - and they had their highest scoring first-half of the series.

-The irony of "the steal" is it came off one of the most commonly run plays the Jazz always ran, the cross-screen for Malone. In Game 6 of the '97 Finals, Jordan actually made the same gamble, only that time Malone saw him coming, got the ball cross court to Horny who kicked it out to Russell for a 3pt that tied the game at 86 with a minute to play. On the road the Jazz choose to play offense in front of their own bench in the 2nd-half. At home, they were in front of the Bulls bench and no one could call out to Malone that MJ was lurking.

-The shotclock stuff gets most of the attention, but most of Jordan's 4th-qtr points were free throws, and there were two really bad calls on MJ drives in the 4th-qtr - one where Carr came over and blocked his shot and another where Stockton stood in and took a charge and the end result was 4 FT's for Chicago.

How was that up and under not a travel?
Jordan kept his right foot as his pivot foot. Great footwork.

I'd really like to neg rep you for posting that vid. It really put me in a bad mood, but I really hate when people neg rep me for stupid stuff. I'm trying to curb my negativity, but seriously do we have to relive bad memories.

Did anyone else get the urge to want to punch that guy in the face?

Yeah, it hurts. But I think it is still awesome to see.

I never want to see any game in that series in my lifetime, but especially this one.

Better go watch that again slice. Definitely a travel he picks up his right for when he moves for the under.

The sad thing is this game is over long before "the steal" if the ref would have got the 2 shot clock call right.

You're right, he definitely drags his pivot foot. I've rewatched that game a half-dozen times - first time I ever noticed it.

Jazz were the better team. Refs won it, not the Bulls.
I've always said, in '97 the Bulls were the better team but the Jazz played the better basketball, and in '98 the Jazz were the better team but the Bulls played the better basketball.

Fun. The commentator, as a Bulls fan, gets points for calling out the two clear shot clock failures. He gets docked about 10 points for not talking about Jordan fouling Malone and Russel.

He's right about Utah just letting him make a play though. There should have been a big time double on Jordan. Every year I see a team lose a playoff game by letting the playmaker make a play.

Pretty sure Jordan drawing too much attention led to at least a couple of game-winners in elimination games for the Bulls (Paxson against PHX, Kerr the year previous).

A Bulls fan's analysis of the biggest lost opportunity in Jazz history? Even he (a guy who obviously couldn't see a Jordan travel if it bit him in the ***) acknowledges that the refs blew multiple calls in his teams favor. Why don't you just give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice in it?
