What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

If we can’t make a big splash in free agency, IMO It’s more productive to keep Favors then drop him and sign just anyone. He’s a much better asset this year then any other year he’s been here. We could get real value for him from a team looking to dump salary. Sure backup C is not a big deal, but Favors is a starter calaber C in a backup role. I’d rather keep him than using our available cap space on a bunch of none stars when we can get a good scorer using him in trade or letting him expire and try again next year. Keep in mind he was one of the main reasons we won that one playoff game. I think people forget how good he really is.

Tobias has a somewhat interesting quote... said he hasn’t though much about FA... culture, fit , and the opportunity to win will be the biggest factors.

Take it with a grain of salt... most guys don’t say money will be the determining factor.

Dude you serious right now? We’ve had him on an expiring deal for two years and netted nothing... it was no secret he was on the block for a couple years too... last year he would have had the most value because a team could control his guarantee. He had less value now and is one knee tweak from having zero value...

Favs is great... great team player... does not fit and is really overpriced for how we’d ise him. Just moving on and finding a long term backup at a fair price would be better.

No one has forgotten how good he is. We all know he's a very good player, probably our third best player. I've never seen anyone say the reason they want to let him go is because he sucks or isn't very good. He plays the same position as one of our two best players and franchise cornerstones. He's a terrible fit in the starting lineup. We have two starting centers so we try to make it work by starting one of them at power forward and it just doesn't work, it never has and it never will. I'd love to keep him as a backup center but at that point he'd only be playing around 16 minutes a game so I wouldn't want to pay him more than 6 or 7 million a year at most.

Gobert $25
Ingles $12
Favors $12
Exum $9.6
Crowder $7.8
Mitchell $3.6
Allen $2.5
Bradley $2
O'Neale $1.6
Niang $1.6
Korver $1.2 (after waive and stretch)
Draft pick cap hold $2
Total: $81 Million

We still have $28 under the cap to spend if Korver retires and we keep Favors at $12. If we let Favors go, we'd have around $70 but what are we doing with that if we don't get a max level guy?

Rivers is one piece of our puzzle! Now, we need another piece, another good 3 point shooter who will fit in with our system, come cheap and stay healthy! He's out there somewhere....tattoo's and all! Korver is getting old. Rivers is young! Our next piece needs to also be young and energetic! Could be a draft choice, could be a free agent, could be someone off the street! Our core players are winners and excel in many areas of basketball! Somebody out there is going to recognize that and jump at the opportunity to sign and play for this Jazz team!

For all those guys against keeping Favors at around $12 -

if we don't get a major free agent, who are you spending the money on?

Substantially improve the team or improve draft position. There is absolutely zero reason to continue win now mode with a fifth seed at best.

OKC has two MVP caliber players. Cant get close.
Houston has an MVP and a one time MVP candidate (should have won). Cant get close.
Utah doesnt have an all star, and the closest thing to a scoring threat will never be more than a 2nd tier all star.

They need to let the failed build die a quick death so it's degradation can fertilize a fast rebounding new crop.

Get two other guys or three other guys... there is still value in free agency if we got two or three good pieces versus one max guy.

Let’s put this another way.

We’ll be paying about 40M next year at the center position, very possibly the least important position in the league.

Brilliant.

Gobert is worth every penny.

Soon you'll turn on Donovan.

You probably hated Malone too.

Look if we sign a Harris level free agent then problem solved, but why take away opportunities to to get a Harris level talent by adding salary from dropping Favors. Every year is different. There could easily be a better market for Favors next year, maybe the right opportunity comes along, also I don’t think the jazz were all that serious about trading Favors two years ago, as we were in a playoff run, IMO the jazz chose not to trade him for Niko, last year, this last year we were primarily dealing with Memphis, and they ended up trading for Tor’s C. Who can say what other opportunities will come next year. If Gobert misses any time, Favors could really come in handy, then he becomes a free agent regardless, and maybe he resigns for cheap. It would be nice to have a max level scorer and Favors as our backup C.

He’s expiring. It’s not like he has 3-4 years left, otherwise I’d agree with you. IMO it’s better to hold on to Favors and try the following years to get a max level scorer. He’s more valuable to the team then the overall numbers suggest the only thing I trust fully is my eyes, and my eyes tell me he’s better then the pure analytics suggests. You can’t just rely on the numbers alone. IMO of course. The main reason I’d keep him is for another chance at a max level player the following year, hell who knows maybe we find such a player in the draft. Crazier things have happened, but long shot, I know. Then we can keep Faves
