What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Not sure. I think I've read things both ways with regards to Favors.
@infection, Looking for a bit just now, I couldn't find a rule. The closest I got was this from question 101 of the FAQ, http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm:

  • A team cannot reacquire a player it traded away during the same season (a season for this purpose being defined as starting on the first day of the regular season and ending on the last day of the Finals). If the player was traded between seasons (i.e., from the first day after the Finals to the last day prior to the start of the next regular season), it cannot reacquire the player prior to the end of the next season. If he is waived by his new team, then he cannot re-sign with his original team until the one-year anniversary of the trade, or until the July 1 following the end of his contract, whichever comes first6. However, if a team trades a player's draft rights, it can reacquire the player during the same season.

But that's about re-signing players that you have traded away. Not re-signing a player you have waived. Of course, it's possible I just didn't find the rule because the salary cap is so complicated.

Hmm... I'm trying to recall, but it seemed like this issue came up with Bolomboy.

We have like 8 threads going right now discussing the same stuff. Can we combine?

So Tony Jones said we are talking our #23 pick with Memphis. Discuss...

What if the Memphis talk isn't about Conley at all? What if we are trying to dump our bad contracts (Korver, Bradley) and #23 for Avery Bradley?

The guy is a warrior PG who doesn't have the have the ball in his hands. It's not a home run move, but he does have "Jazz DNA". If we traded Korver ($3.44) and Bradley ($2), Bradley ($13) would only use $8 million on Bradley.

We would still have max space for a run at Tobias who played with Bradley in a couple spots before....

Bradley is trash

Snell: 11m, 12m
Ersan: 7m, 7m

Bucks own 30th and 60th picks.

Would Jazz take either contract for a late first round pick?

I wouldn’t want to help any team out of financial/cap difficulty when I want their players...
I.e. Brogdon or Middleton

Pretty sure that’s all this is about

Jazz can't attract FA's and Jazz have to trade a 1st round pick for a veteran PG every two years.

A trade with Milwaukee solves both problems. If not milwaukee, then the Jazz need to find somebody's pick for when Conley bails in 21.

Yes, I am already feeling salty.

Just listened to the new Lowe Post with Kevin Arnovitz and they both said the Jazz are going to be crazy aggressive starting “like now.” They’re not gonna wait a couple years to see if Mitchell blossoms yadda yadda yadda. Lowe said he’d be shocked if Utah didn’t come out with a dynamic game changer by July 7th or 10th or whatever and Arnovitz agreed. Zach said the Jazz have been frustrated by what’s happened in the playoffs and they know they need someone who can offer a stylistic change.

At what point in the podcast do they talk about the Jazz?

If by “already” you mean before I joined in 2011, yes. Ok

Give this like 60 seconds worth of consideration. Reportedly, the T'wolves are "aggressively" shopping Wiggins. I think he's got 3 more years left on his deal. Yes, he's overpaid, but what if Minnesota attached this year's lottery pick (11) and another FRP.

Here's the thing, I think Wiggins can play at the 4. I know he's been disappointing relative to expectations, but I think he's basically Harrison Barnes (with a little more bounce). If he were given a clear role and could stay in his lane, he might be able to contribute. Plus, we'd get to draft in the lottery, something that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

Probably, we don't want to do it, but it's out there.

Okay, this idea sucks. Nevermind. Move along.

Wiggins AND #11? I consider it.

I have much more faith in our coaching staff, our locker room and Mitchell/Gobert leadership than anything Minny has to get Wiggins in the right direction.

Not sure on the order these things would need to happen in, but:

-Trade for Conley, moving max salary basically: Favors/Exum/Korver/Allen/Bradley/#23
-Renounce our FA and waive Neto, opens up ~20M cap space total
-Sign a guard and a PF to approximately 3/30M deals (my ideal would be Beverly/Thad Young, but there are other reasonable options, heck maybe Rubio would consider returning off the bench, continuity is nice). Get team options on year 3 if possible.
-Use the room MLE (I think a bit below 5M) on a backup C, plenty of options there, say Robin Lopez? (I wonder how much Looney will get, doubt he'll move for that money, but it's nice to dream)

Ideally wind up with:

Conley/Beverley
Mitchell/O'Neale
Ingles/Crowder
Young/Niang
Gobert/Lopez

Fill out the roster with minimums (could bring back Neto/Thabo/Udoh if they'd be willing? as I said continuity is nice) and our 2nd.

Not sure we'd be favorites, but that is a tough tough team.

Lopez and Beverley aren't coming off anybody's bench.

Beverley I could see being a tough sell (I mentioned there could be other options there for guards). And I think you're thinking of the wrong Lopez brother. Robin just spent half the season coming off Chicago's bench.

Somebody like Cory Joseph might be the more realistic PG bench guy.

If we got Ilyasova and #30 for nothing, I think we gotta consider it. For all those people pining over Mirotic, Ilyasova played ahead of him in the playoffs. He is also only making $7 million next year and is nonguaranteed for 2020-21.

If we get in the market for Harris, we are a simple Korver waive and stretch away from max space. We could still sign Russell if we have Ilyasova.

If we are honest with ourselves, Ilyasova is the kind of player we end up signing if we strike out in big boy free agency. If we like someone at #30, might as well get a rotation player for free too. All comes down to how much we like somebody at #30.
