What's new

News, rumors and buzz around the draft and free agency

If we read the tea leaves here, it looks like Butler could end up in Houston, LA or Miami, meaning Philly will probably have to back up the truck for Tobias Harris. The Jazz may have concluded that Tobias is out of reach.

I think Bojan will get offered a 4yr deal starting at $200K less than Favors' cap number (so Jazz don't have to release Neto or Niang). Other teams can certainly offer more; Jazz aren't going to be able to outbid everyone. The pitch will be to play for a legit contender. Indiana might vie for a 5-8 seed. I guess they could catch Toronto if Kawhi leaves, but Philly, Milwaukee and Boston will all be better than Indiana, with the strong possibility Nets will be too.

If Bojan joins the Jazz, it's probably between Jazz and Denver for 1st. Portland will hang in there, but I don't think they'll be better than us. And the Lakers, even with a 3rd max FA still have a crappy bench. Of course, that may change with ring chasers joining them.

As for Portis, I guess they're meeting with him as a Plan B. Hate to release Favors, make an offer to Washington and then they match and keep him or trade him elsewhere.

Khem Birch is another athletic big. It looks like the game has really slowed down for him...,

I'd love him, but I think he's not likely to be available. He's at the point of his career that he needs to prioritize money. I don't think we'll be able to give the highest offer.

Regarding the depth issue if the Jazz get Bogdanovic (or Gallinari... or Harris):

These moves make the Jazz a destination, particularly for smart players that are serious about winning. There will be players the Jazz can get that they might not otherwise, and for potentially cheaper than they would otherwise.

Yes, no doubt. But there will be at least a few other teams coming out of this free agent period who will be able to pitch themselves as serious contenders in need of a cheap piece or two here or there. Hopefully we can get what we need.
