I agree that life is getting better, overall. I disagree with the evolutionary psychology nonsense and the notion that the free market, with no help from government science funding, produced things like cochlear implants. Pretty typical Stossel.

Things are getting better. They have been getting better for basically forever.
Things are getting better in the U.S., things are getting better in Europe, things are getting better in Asia. Things are getting better everywhere with a few spots currently experiencing some sort of conflict or crisis and not being better at the moment.
All sorts of politics, all sorts of economies, all of them getting better.

People in general, but Americans in particular, have had fear and the scarcity mindset pumped into their brains for so long by so many different institutions that they'll never feel like things are any getting better - even if they are.

Well, it's more instructional than funny. Standing in front of a very large man and smugly stating that he thinks his chosen profession is "fake" is probably not a good idea.
Even better. Don't say the wrong thing to someone more powerful than you or you'll learn a good lesson. Not a good idea.

Actually, the opposite about what is causing life to become better is true. Governments have typically been weak and untrustworthy. For thousands of years society stumbled along from one massacre and rape to another because government was incapable of protecting the masses from warlords, diseases, and famine. This applies to the social contract as well. For thousands of years one didn’t call the police or trust the judicial system to handle a crime. Instead, people acted off their emotion and instincts, resulting in revenge (blood) killings. If one didn’t agree with a judge or with the king, they’d assassinate them and (sometimes) take their wives and children as slaves.
Life is becoming better because government has become sufficiently large to handle (many) of life’s challenges and inequalities and offer vital services that improve one’s standard of living. Imagine the “free market” trying to provide garbage cleanup or pave roads.
Life is becoming better because of one’s involvement in the government. Now, government isn’t seen as some priest, warlord, or corrupt king who inherited the throne. Government is us. From the city to the federal level, everyone has some level of voice in the leviathan of our government.
Thomas Hobbes was right about our natural state and was essentially right when he called for a stronger and more centralized form of government.
Want a window into our past? Just look at Afghanistan. A weak government where no one respects the social contract and everything is determined by “free market” forces. He who owns the most weapons, rules!

Oooh - I hope so. That would mean our libertarian poster boy is guilty of bringing forth frivolous litigation.
Stossel sued and collected 425K from the WWF claiming partial hearing loss from an open hand slap.
He now of course regrets his decision to sue in the belief that the benevolent invisible hand of the free market would have restored his hearing.
