Floater Problem....

So we are taking the worst shot in basketball by design? Maybe you take a handful if this is the case but to have the top two guys in the league in floater attempts is a super ****** plan.
I really hate when people frame any shot this way. Not all shots are created equal just because they come from the same relafive position. There are good floaters and bad floaters, it all depends on angle, balance, and speed.

The ones that really drive me nuts are when Donovan drives in and is surrounded by two or three defenders and he still forces up an off balance floater that has almost no chance of going in. If that many defenders are around you then somebody is open.

I'm ok with Conley taking them since he's historically been good at it and maybe they'll start to fall. I'd rather Donovan just take a normal pullup jumper. Conley's floaters are under control, and most of Donovan's are like eurostep off balance 15 foot shotput looking things.

If I am the opposite defense I will stay with Rudy and let them take that floaters all day long.

Yep. It’s not like they’re missing them because defenders are stepping up and altering shots. They’re missing them because they’re tough ****ing shots.

Conley was elite at that shot his entire career. If the D sees you hitting that sbot over and over again they are going to adjust positioning, all it takes is a few inches to open the passing lanes

Conley has been the best in the league at it... had one season where we was 47% and another where he was 49% in floater range, but over his career he's at a little under 40%. So 40-45% I think would be a fair expectation. Even at that rate its not a great shot... returns a net of .8 or .9 points per shot... with little to no chance of getting fouled. I get that defenses may adjust in a given night if they see 4 or 5 go through the net... but most will trust the math. I get that you need a mix of shots and not all can be dunks, free throws, or three pointers.

Mike is shooting 33% on pull up threes... DM shooting 34-35%... Harden shoots 35% on it. Those are decent percentages and I'd take those shots over the floaters. I get that we want to setup the lob but I'm not sure it what we should build our whole offensive identity around.

I agree. But if you want to keep Rudy happy...

Win games... I get the argument he needs the ball at times... buuuuuttt we can't take a quarter of our shots in nba no man's land to setup a lob (it ain't working). Shoot the pullup three and more lanes open up... but Rudy in the dunkers spot and when the driving lanes open up he will get cleaner looks because the defenders will have to move further to contest.

For perspective Donovan is still 23 years old and in his 3rd NBA season. Asking him to be the best offensive player on a title contending team is a lot to ask.

However the floater is always a terrible shot, and I truly don’t get it at this point. It’s never going to result in good offense or consistent winning. Yet Donovan and Mike insist on making the worst shot the biggest part of their game. When the floaters cut down and the ball starts moving, the offense will bounce. If they continue shooting mid range shots and floaters, the results will be mixed and mostly bad.

Floater shots are problematic for a number of reasons. They are shots taken off balance, and thus many of them will not go into the basket.
