Cast the desktop not the tab. Then alt-tab changes everything.

Does my friend need a smart tv for this? He doesn’t have one.

He does have hdmi inputs on the back of his tv which it appears these chromecasts plug into.

Smart TV makes it easier. But it will work with a Chromecast.

But tell your loser friend to move into the 21st century and spend $300 on a smart TV.

Nope, the chromecast obviates the need for smart TV. All he needs is an HDMI input. Most smart TV menus and apps suck *** which is why chromecasts are an essential fixture in any living room.
 
Other than the perverse reasons I’ve already inquired on behalf of my friend, he’s also wondering how else a chromecast is handy?
 
I lose my remote a lot so being able to run my TV from my phone is nice. It works with Google home so I can just say "pause" or "play" or tell it what I want to watch and it does it as long as my phone is nearby.
