What's new

My Quarantine

Wes, you chose to do this?

Wow you must have big ones.

If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger, I guess.

What the **** else am I gonna do? I'm working from home. So is my wife. The kids' schools are closed. It makes no sense to be socially distant 90-95% of the time and put one's self at risk that other 5-10%. If I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it right. Especially since NJ is exploding in cases. We went from 98 to 178 cases in one day. An 80% growth. If we see even over 50% today, **** is getting ugly.

I plan on driving my truck around for about 1-2 miles a day each day just to keep it active.

Some random thoughts I've thought of over the last few days.

~I think the Dow goes down to a low of about 16,750 if I had to guess. This could devastate baby boomers if they had minimal savings to begin with if the market doesn't recover quickly enough.
~The economy could be crippled in so many different ways. As GF has mentioned, small businesses in particular could be crushed by this if it lasts 2+ months. Many are probably already in the red. Or damn close to it. What happens to those business owners? And perhaps more importantly, their employees? How do people pay their bills? This scares me. The social/economic ramifications are terrifying, especially if this lingers into late May, June and July. I sadly think it will.
~Unemployment will spike dramatically over the next 3-6 months.
~I think many companies start to lay off but not now. That would be a bad look. They'll do it shortly after this subsides.
~We could've let this run its course and really helped our social security. ****ed up but true. It wouldn't solved everything but...
~Take out cash. I could see places stop taking credit cards.
Economies that rely on small businesses ecosystems will be devastated such as the travel industry. China was already the biggest foreign market to travel here. That is all but dried up. Complete towns will be devastated. Jackson Wyoming, were the working class already can't afford to live there will be greatly impacted. Wyoming will take a big hit from lack of tourism and tanking oil prices will hit the state very hard. Alaska is in the same boat. Cruise lines are on hold and oil is tanked. That state is screwed. Airlines will go bankrupt and then what? Sucks for the new Salt Lake airport.

We don't know what's coming...

Yep. many (most?) sales jobs too. Real estate as one example.

I was just jabbing ya. Families with little kids are going to have it tough. I think I'm more lucky on that front with one 12 year old who we can have conversations and teaching moments over the effects of the Coronavirus with. That's much less stressful than a household with young kids in small spaces who can't yet process why mommy and daddy never leave the house anymore while only wanting all of your attention. These are unfortunate times. I do hope it all works out for you guys.

Tell me about it. We're building a new house in Park City (deed restricted) that at the best will be postponed and at worst, we'll lose altogether. Construction has halted on sites with too large of a crew.

It's honestly not a big deal. It's cliched but I'll take it one day at a time. 30 days or so is nothing in that regard. So far as explaining it to the kids, whatevs. We just said there are germs so schools and businesses are closed to minimize sicknesses. We'll make the best of it. My wife is taking them for a short walk now.

Like honestly, we're sitting at home. I'll be bored. The kids will tick me off some. The wife even more I'm sure. But this is nothing compared to those who have to serve overseas. Compared to living every day of one's life in extreme squalor.

I think I’m gonna inventory all the food we have and keep track of what is used and after a week and that pace, figure out how long the remaining food should last.
