Press release:

Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor announced today that Rich Sheubrooks has been hired by the franchise as its Executive Director of Global and Pro Scouting. In this newly created position, Sheubrooks will focus on the scouting of international prospects as well as the professional leagues.

"We feel fortunate to be able to bring someone in with as much international experience as Rich has," said Kevin O'Connor. "Rich's knowledge and background can be a real asset to the Jazz organization in what has clearly become a global game."

Sheubrooks joins the Jazz after spending the previous four seasons as the Director of Global Scouting for the Charlotte Bobcats. Sheubrooks is well known on the international basketball scene for his role as a Global Basketball Consultant for Nike where he has played a key role in organizing the Nike Hoop Summit the past 14 years. The annual game features the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Select Team playing against a World Select Team, comprised of top players 19-years-old or younger from around the world. Sheubrooks has a long history with the sports apparel brand, working as European Sports Marketing Manager from 1997-99 and Basketball Grassroots & Events Manager from 1990-1994.

Prior to his work with the Bobcats, Sheubrooks spent six seasons in the same role with the Memphis Grizzlies. He has also served as the Director of the Michael Jordan Euro Tour (2007) and as the Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Commission (1994-97). Sheubrooks has also worked as an NBA Analyst for Sky TV in the United Kingdom since 2004. In addition, he has collegiate coaching experience having spent three seasons as head coach at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M Kingsville) from 1976-79, following two seasons each as an assistant at both Texas A&I and Midwestern State.

Sheubrooks earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M Corpus Christi and his master's degree from Texas A&M Kingsville. Having lived in Europe for the past 12 years, Sheubrooks and his wife, Muriel Helms, currently reside in Barcelona, Spain, while also maintaining a home in Lake Norman, N.C.

The list of guy's achievements doesn't scream "awesome move" to me. Better snatch someone from SAS

How is this a good move? What diamond in the rough did this guy find for the Bobcats or Grizz?

Scouting overseas players isn't about finding a diamond in the rough, generally. Generally, it's finding a player that's already good and projecting how they convert to the NBA.

I would say Pau Gasol has been pretty good. And the Bobcats haven't drafted an overseas player besides Ajinca. That's very much besides that the overseas pipeline has been pretty dry for a while now. And that this is a new and wise position to be creating.

Just because the guy is the Scout for a team doesn't mean he makes the decisions on who to draft. He just provides team with information.

This looks like a very good hire.

A couple of tweets:

From Gordon Chiesa:
"Congrats to Rich Sheubrooks named Executive Dir. of Global/Pro Scouting for the Utah Jazz. Savvy talent evaluator, understands Euro players."

From Jonathan Givony
"Utah hires Rich Sheubrooks as director of Global Scouting. As often happens in the NBA, a very good front office just got even better."

Givony sort of comes across as a less biased journalist than Chiesa. Im gonna pull a Thriller by saying Folks, we seriously have ourselves quite the organization to be rooting for, for the coming years. Great front office, coupled with a growingly awesome GM and serious potential with our draft picks despite having above average starters. I seriously cant think of more than 3 teams that have potential to be much better than us 5 years down the line; we are seriously set up for success, and we have the organization that we can trust now to screw it up. Id hate to be among fanbases like Golden State, Houston, Denver or the Suns right now. I think we're going to have some good playoff-series against the Trailblazers in the near future. Best of luck to our team, in terms of injuries, athletes meeting/exceeding their potential, and keeping solid components onto our team

international information is very valuable especially for second round draft picks

Well, the JAzz have drafted Koufos, Fesenko and now Kanter. Granted, Koufos and Kanter had U.S. experience on either the collegiate or HS level. Also had players like Arroyo, Pavlovic and the great Alexandar Radojevic. And, of course, Utah drafted a young Russian bookworm named after a rifle or something. So whoever was filling the duties before a positon was "newly created" must have had the ear of management.

Koufus was born in the USA, and played his whole career in the USA. He is not European. He just has Greek roots, which is why he able to be naturalized by the Greece National Team.

And who knows? Maybe a guy like this would have preferred Marc Gasol over Fesenko in 2007.
