WHO WOULD WIN IN A 7 GAME SERIES?

Team 1.

PG: Allen Iverson // Mark Price
SG: Vince Carter // Kobe Bryant (6th)
SF: James Worthy // Marques Johnson
PF: Karl Malone // Bobby Jones
C: Shaquille O’Neale // Arvydas Sabonis

Team 1. Writeup

Every team is stacked, but no team has a frontcourt as dominant as mine. They’ll be the focal point of my team, while Iverson, Kobe and Vinsanity can go off for 30 or 40 points at any time. Worthy and Jones are my glue guys, while Price, Johnson and Sabonis all provide elite passing off the bench. I can go big and powerful, or small and run them off the court (AI, Kobe, Carter, Worthy and Malone would make an awesome “Death Lineup” back in the day). My team can pass, shoot, drive, score and play defense. Plus they’d be a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

Team 5 Writeup

We are going to start with Terry Porter on the floor because we already have enough ball handling on the wing and he adds shooting and defense. Great to let him take the first shot at Iverson.

Look my team is just flat out better. We have 3X MVP Magic Johnson who was also 3x Finals MVP... so when the lights come on he's ready and experienced. We have MVP Julius Erving on the wing running with him. We have 2X MVP holding it down in the middle with prime Moses Malone... he was the Finals MVP in 1983 when he curb stomped Kareem into the ground. In 1982 he averaged 31 and 15 rebounds... he is the best offensive rebounder in the history of the league and it isn't particularly close. Great outlet passer... highly skilled... him and Webber will hold down the fort just fine.

Then we bring George Gervin (the 1982 scoring champ with 32 pts per game) off the bench in the Manu Ginobili role of super sub. We pair him with offensive and defensive studs in prime Penny Hardaway and Larry Nance. We add a lights out shooter in Glen Rice to the group as well as Rasheed Wallace. We might be a tad undersized, but Sabonis ain't keeping up with that lineup.

Look Iverson is fun but he's a defensive liability and he doesn't complement the bigs... he's going to take inefficient shots and he ain't feeding those guys. Can't wait for Mailman and Shaq to quit playing after watching him dribble the air out of the ball and shoot contested jumpers. Mark Price is fine but he ain't guarding Magic or Penny (they are way too big yo!).

We are going to run the floor making Mailman and Shaq try to keep up while Young Vince and Young Kobe are cute stories, but they struggled in the playoffs early in their careers (you remember the airballs right). Bring your young guys against my experienced finals MVPs and lets see what happens. Bring your ball hoggy average passers and watch my guys pick them apart

Team 1 ruined their team with their guard play. Malone and Shaw would go wild no getting the ball.

I’ve watched hundreds of Iverson games as a huge AI fan. People only assume he didn’t pass because of reputation alone.
He dribbled the **** out of the ball too! We can’t pretend he was some pass first point guard... big men need someone to feed them... please tell me which big man benefitted from AI creating for them. He needed low usage guys around him if he was going to be effective... every shot he takes is a shot Shaq or mailman probably could have taken... also a defensive liability in this matchup.

Lots of pg’s dominate the ball. I don’t think he’s ever played with talented studs for bigs.

We aren’t talking about just being ball dominant here... we are talking about thee most ball dominant player in the league... his usage rate was 34.... like the one of the highest in the history of the league and his TS% was below 50%... which is below league average. He averaged 4-5 assists his first all star year in 99-00. He’s a volume scorer paired with another volume scorer in Kobe... all that takes good out of the mouths of Shaq and mailman.

It is more likely that those defenses carried AI than AI carried them. He had to be surrounded by low usage defensive minded guys to work.

If you have Shaq and Mailman one of the worst guards you pair them with would be AI.

Even with more modern players, people are unable to draft teams with shooting. Like, lolwtfbbq???
I was shocked at how low the 3P attempt rate was for some of the really good shooters during this era. It was a tough exercise to do because I didn't want to ignore great players from the 80s even though we don't know how they'd fit in a more advanced era.

I think NBA coaches needed just one assistant that was a math major. Could have had a huge opportunity in the 80s and 90s.

He played sg that year. That’s actually not bad and above average

LMAO. Yes it’s a great marriage but that team is a lotto team without or barely scraping into the 7-8 seed. Don’t be ridiculous.

They would feast. Shaq getting wide open glass shattering dunks and Malone getting wide open 15 ft shots, yikes!! Yes, he held onto the ball a lot but he was Unguardable and used his skill set to create wide open shots for his teammates how the hell do you think that talentless team around him on offense made the finals. IMO he developed his style due to a lack of offensive talent around him. Both he and Shaq and Malone. I think people over exaggerate certain talent combinations. Those three are a dangerous combination imo. Maybe the most potent in this draft.

I also probably misunderstand this draft because I would think the point of doing something more modern would naturally include modern players. Like, that would be... kind of the whole point. But I dodged responsibility in running this one so I should shut up.
