What's new

Players only meeting.

You may be right. At the same time, sports in particular can be a type of entertainment that brings us all together, regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status, etc.

I would be much more impressed if instead of cancelling games, NBA players did some of the following:

-Initiated meetings (volunteering their time) with local police departments in NBA cities to discuss potential changes to protect citizens.
-Promoted more diverse police departments that were representative of the people they serve.
-Initiated town hall meetings to discuss potential changes to local law enforcement.
-Contributed a portion of their salaries or NBA revenues to additional police training or resources that could help keep people safer.
-Contributed a portion of their salaries or NBA revenues to promote black entrepreneurship, which could help uplift black communities out of poverty.

These are just ideas off the top of my head that would be more productive than cancelling the season.

The sad thing is that cancelling the season will likely decrease people's attention to these matters. Which I think is the opposite of what they want.

I honestly think that a lot of what you were suggesting is going to come from this. Even if they resume every thing tomorrow, they’ve literally set the conversation for the country, regardless what side you agree with.

And this season is already pushing next season to the limit. Players aren’t going to want to start December 1.

Who are they trying to hurt by cancelling the season? The owners? The fans? Bubble ball was a good platform as the issues were talked about in pregame, on commercials, interviews, etc. All of that will now be gone for reruns of Big Bang Theory. Whatever, it is their decision.

The players may not be able to make a whole lot of change by themselves... but... the owners are rich powerful individuals who are tied into and can influence government officials. The strike and financial ramifications to that group may prompt them to move past lip service and start acting.

I think they still play it out.

I think their voices are louder in the bubble, sorry but it is true.

But if they want to walkout, then do it and create a drop the mike moment. Or get the cameras on them and few players make a statements for few minutes before each game. But it's up to them.

Covid and the racial injustice stuff all just sucks...like...royally. Can we just skip to 2021?

Spoiler- things don't get better in 2021, no matter who the president is. . .

I don't think they are irrational and thinking these things will disappear overnight... I think if the reaction to the shooting was different then you'd call that some progress. It seems as though law enforcement will not be held accountable and this puts pressure to force their hand. If the governments don't respond and the players really do walk out then it will reduce the leverage and will reduce the voice they have until games start again. People will find an entertainment alternative imo.

Who knows... but I don't blame them for wanting to be done and feeling like progress is superficial thus far.

I do agree... it will be interesting to see how our issues will be covered if Biden takes office. I'm curious how much scrutiny he will receive if things don't change.

Its too bad the Dems don't have a new face. Biden, as a VP under a black President, didnt really do anything for race relations in his 8 years. I don't have much faith in him doing anything substantial.

Our country has major scars and bad incidents will continue no matter who is in charge.

The first part of this post contains the usual bromides. I don’t think these things are as true now as they were back in whatever century they were initially uttered in.

As for the rest of your post, I can guarantee you that many players have spoken out and tangibly worked on many if not all of these things. Perhaps that’s what they want to rejoin after leaving the bubble.

As of right now, there’s no evidence that their resumption in the bubble has produced any political or juridical progress.

That is a valid point but I do think in 2020 people more people consider race relations a priority.

I'm against kneeling but I supported their right to do it and was here for them every game.

This I think solves absolutely nothing but if they feel so strongly then whatever, I'm not going lose any sleep. Again though, what does this accomplish?

Cancel the season and perhaps next season too if COVID is still a problem. Also take the players and coaches checks from them too. Let them go work for a living.

This has been the craziest basketball season ever in addition to the year itself.

Rudy’s diagnosis on March 11 legitimately was the wrecking ball for 2020.

Kobe Bryant is what started this entire ****** year. We all should’ve seen this coming after that. Just a horrible year of death and suffering.

I fully support the fight for equality and justice. If the players want to use their platform to make a statement.. cool. Nothing but love and respect.

At the same time I feel like all this does in the end is hurt the NBA as a business and hurt the vast majority of fans who are not racist and just want to watch a game they enjoy.

The people who need to change are not going to change because the NBA shutdown for a day, 3 weeks or 30 years. They don't give a damn. It's like me boycotting work to get a supermodel who doesn't know who the f*** I am to marry me.

I would hope there is. You would think there would be lots of media coverage of this type of effort from players. I haven't heard any of it. To quote you (below), as of right now, there is no evidence of it.

As of right now, there’s no evidence that their resumption in the bubble has produced any political or juridical progress.
That would be impossible to measure considering the short amount of time they have been in the bubble, and the infinite number of external factors that would impact said political or juridical progress. Its quite possible their efforts have done significant good in raising awareness, and now they are throwing that progress away due to one stupid cop. As I mentioned earlier, this stuff has to be measured over longer time periods.

I finally have a reason to quit my job.

I have mixed feelings about this. My view of the world really changed over the last year, I was diagnosed with cancer in December and have gone through hell trying to survive. I really have no patience for this grandstanding nonsense. The important things in life start at home with your family and loved ones.
I spent dec, Jan, Feb, March, April, may, locked down because I am/ was extremely high risk. I guess what I am feeling is that there are better ways of effecting change. Sitting here watching people literally burn down their own community just didn't make me want to be a part of whatever they were trying to accomplish.
Now watching these guys literally take their balls and go home does nothing but make me feel like they are just virtue signaling.
They have a very unique platform that they are just going to waste.
