Game Thread August 30, 2020: Nuggets at Jazz - Game 6

Added to Calendar: 08-30-20

I still think we're playing pretty much above the talent level we've got, against a team that's far more talented 1 to 12 than we are.
Certainly sucks a bit we didn't KO them when we had the chance, but I'm not going to complain very much.
We know athletic help is needed at the 3 higher spots if Jazz is serious about trying their best to be a tier one team.

Like many budding superstars, they know they are great. Don is no different. However, the entire team concept is built around a guy who can't take over a game. Yes, Rudy can shut down the paint or his guy for stretches, but playoff series aren't won by guys who can't score outside of 3 feet anymore.

Don knows this. He probably knows he can score even easier if he didnt have to force feed Gobert so much or attack a lane Rudy isn't stretching.

the problem right now is that we aren't building this team around anyone. Last couple of seasons we built a system around Rudy with energy and muscle that led to one of the league's best defense. then we decided to shift away from rudy and build a "complete team" that isn't centered around anyone. like the 04 pistons and the gritt n grind grizz. teams that had no "star". but to make it work, it would require the perfect chemistry. Like Rudy's presence needs to make up for others lack of defense. And Conley/Bojan/DM needs to get enough buckets to hide Rudy on offense. it wouldn't click if these elements can't make up for each other

I still think we lost tonight when we didn't stay aggressive when Jokic went out. We were up 10. We through out a trash lineup, blew the lead, and gave them momentum.

Quin has to trust our main guys to play heavy minutes in game 7.

Don
Rudy
Conley
Clarkson
Royce
Joe

Niang and Morgan should only play for severe rest issues.

Can't play lockdown defense anymore. We just don't have

Conley wasn't the main problem. tonight, at least the contributed on offense (although he had two terrible TOs). This team is flawed. The main problem is defense: we don't have multiple guys who can defend the perimeter. If not Murray (who has been incredible, it will be someone else). Ingles has lost a step. Royce is a good defender but lacks the length to stop bigger guys. JC tries hard but he has never be known as a good defender (he gets lost on D too). Conley plays decent D against small PGs, but can't guard bigger ones (or swicth). Bojan tries but lacks lateral quickness. Niang is too slow and doesn't bother any shot. Bradley, slow too.

Even if we win in game 7, this needs to be addressed during the offseason. We have lost our defensive identity. At least last year we could throw Rubio and Crowder in the mix (although Ricky used to get blown by on D, at least he gave you deflections, effort and positional versatility). Favors was mobile and could even switch to small guards. Now we only have Royce (if he is having a good day).
Conley hasn’t stopped anyone, dude. Not even Monte Morris

Did I say Conley played great D and locked down Morris? No. I said he wasn't the only one to blame and that at least he contributed on O (unlike Royce, Joe or JC...you may also look at Rudy this game).

My lenghty post was to tackle on a bigger issues, which is how the team is constructed. It's not fair to blame one guy and treat him like a scapegoat when there are more reasons why we lost this game (and you can say has been present throughout the season):
  • Bench sucks (especially when Clarkson is not hot)
  • Lack of perimeter defense. We don't have depth or the personnel.
  • Not athletic/long enough. A unit with Joe, Niang, JC, Bradley and Conley on the floor is not gonna cut it.

He’s tough but passes can turn into turnovers... making them at least think a little more will help. We are giving them everything they want. Murray jumpers, no turnovers, Jokic jumpers, offensive rebounds...
We ain't the raptors, we aren't rotating fast enough to stop Jokic's passes from being a threat. He doesn't turn the ball over when a man is open. Even if he does 1 or 2 times, it will be dead ball turnovers. Can't help on Jokic, Rudy has to stay on him at all times. Help for Murray has to come from somewhere else but I am becoming more and more resigned to fact that this is who we are and all we are capable of.

In terms of coaching, my biggest concern is that it's been 3 games in a row where we have been torched by Murray, and I don't see any adjustment on how to slow him down. Simply, we don't have an answer. Like in game 4, I guess we will have to outscore them.

to stop Murray we gotta be able to get through the screen and be more active on defending the pick n roll, which is pretty much impossible based on our current personnel.

Jamal Murray, one of the most inefficient scorers in the NBA is 31 for his last 41. That is 75%. Jesus.
That’s the biggest part of the problem... I keep waiting for him to have a 2/9 from three night and it just ain’t happening.

It's because Snyder is an overrated coach. This is the peak of his iteration of the Utah Jazz. The sooner the Miller family realizes that the better. Look at what happened to the Raptors after they dumped Dwane Casey's *** for Nick Nurse. The Jazz need new blood. We can't risk not trying to make changes for Donny or he'll dip and go elsewhere.

SO I went back and watched the 50- point highlight package for Jamal Murray and what really stands out is there's soooooo much damage being done with the stepback j.

The corner 3 he hits over Rudy with 1:11 to go in the 3rd is probably the best display of just how devastating that stepback is, he's fainting at it and it's got Rudy walking on eggshells. Rudy knows thats what he wants to do, he knows thats what he wants to do, but the advantage is all his because he knows where he's going and can time it when rudy's off balance, and rudy's gotta try to react/guess, and thats how it played out. Rudy probably thought he was headed to the basket or for a stepback long 2, he ends up in the corner in 3range with a clean look.

(the step back in question @ 2:31)

Honestly I can't kill the rotations, I think the people in here killing the rotations are being unfair. You cant rotate to a guy who's discarding his man with a step-back in time.

The only real question with the defense is if you send the double, how early is it, do you send it at halfcourt. which QS isn't gonna do, it's a risky play.. IDK...

the idea that faster rotations are going to stop what Murray is doing is false though... The move is to not bite on the step-back, which is very difficult...

But if you pre- rotate your Jokic... once Rudy drops... then Murray has to make the decision... if it is Craig or Morris or someone else wide open then so be it.

We have to throw different looks at it... I feel like we are a pitcher with a reliable fastball and we are playing a fastball hitting team... and we still don’t throw changeups until there are like 2 minutes left in the game.

Even if they don’t work... that’s okay... you are trying to make them think and maybe hesitate just a little.

It also felt like we put Rudy in the dunkers spot most of the night rather than running him on the high screen... maybe because they were trapping but Jokic had foul trouble and I still want to run **** at him.

Rudy had more trouble with catching and finishing tonight... couple were tough passes but a couple we have to have.
