What's new

Now that a Conley trade is all but impossible, can we get him a pick n pop big?

He has maybe been a hair below prime Dwight’s overall impact on the game. Haters at some point need to chill.
He has the couple week stint were he pouted and kinda sucked on defense... it gave the haters some ammo. In the playoffs our defensive scheme was full on stupid. We basically expected Rudy to drop and protect the paint on the pick and then also get out to Jokic to prevent a jumper and also please don’t get close so hard that you get blown by. It might have worked better had the perimeter guys put any pressure on Murray but it was pretty clear they weren’t cutting it. Had a lot of different options we could have tried but didn’t. Really put Rudy in a place we’re he was sure to fail.

The whole “make Jokic a scorer” is fine as a strategy but maybe when he’s shooting 150% you bring in a third guy and roar are... if Torrey Craig or Monte Morris are wide open you live with that. Or at least mix it up so that there might be a small hesitation or slip up here or there.

It has been an annual playoff tradition.

Nah, we play Bud-ball.

I think the jazz should take a good look at the five guys they have playing alongside gobert and Mitchell. I feel like we have too many players that need the ball to be effective and most of those guys are inefficient at defense. I think the jazz should be open to trading anyone in the roster except for gobert and Mitchell and they should be actively looking for ways to upgrade the team with the assets we have.

I think the possibility that Mike is traded has increased now that the ownership change happened. DL wouldn't have to go to the owner he asked to do the deal and ask to undo it. Not sure if there is a good enough return. You'd have to get a better fit or a fit that is just as okay and take on some money to get other assets in the deal.

There might also be a fresh evaluation about how it worked out with a new owner.

I’ve raised my odds from less than 5% to less than 5.5%.

Given the Ingles connection I think we could wrap Baynes up for BAE for two years... might have to go close to the taxpayer MLE if its one year. I honestly think we should investigate trading Mike and see what turns up, but otherwise I think we'd do well to keep the cap sheet pretty clean for next year. So don't do the extend Mike thing... sign Baynes to a one year deal in between 4-6M and sign Shaq Harrison to a 4/12-13M deal. So you split the MLE or use part of the MLE and BAE. I'd play hardball with JC but if you can keep him around 10M you have an outside shot at ducking the tax by offloading Ed and TB. Even if you pay a little tax you'd be out the following year and you'd hopefully have added a value deal with Shaq.

The Athletic has been doing some cool stuff. Hollinger has Shaq rated fairly high on his FA shooting guards with a value at $8M+ per year. I think he could slip through the cracks and be a steal. If his shooting last year isn't real then the defense and versatility is worth $3M+ alone... if the shooting is real then he's an 8-10M bargain at a position of need. Will DL and Zanik go name brand or would they bet on a lesser known quantity?

I could be wrong but I don't think that will effect our hard cap. Assuming we keep Gobert then we will be operating over the cap regardless right? Can we clear enough money to actually sign anything over the mle?

No I just think you want to avoid the repeater tax and even with some new money I don't see us being an every year taxpayer. Would free us up to use MLE next year. Maybe Conley figures it out or looks great and we want to retain him... IDK I just don't think its a good use to go multi years on a backup center given that we will be pushing the tax the next few years. I'd almost rather add the value contracts like Shaq and some other guys by splitting up the MLE. They become solid trade assets in addition to what they bring on the court.

Okay, gotcha. I guess if get value back for him that makes sense to me. If not I would rather clear up some room now and keep him as an elite back up PG and great veteran presence for the next few years assuming he's willing.

I'd have the conversation with him to see where his head is at very least. I think Mike and JC are kinda redundant. They are different but fill the same role. JC is better at it and will cost less. Mike does it in a prettier way and involves his teammates... and he does it in a way that might be more viable in a playoff setting but will cost more and is more likely to decline or breakdown. I would not keep both long term. If JC bounces the cash crunch this year is solved. We might negotiate an extension then but have it be in the 10-12 range for another year or two if he wants some certainty.

If we lock in JC I'd look and see what Mike can get and plan on being a taxpayer the following year if you took on some extra money. I think Mike is the big swing chip we can use.
