Interesting article on espn today. It’s about Giannis and his decision to sign the supermax with the Bucks or not and the big ripple effect it could have. For a while it talks about Gobert and the writer mentions Utah and Gobert perhaps finding a middle ground at 4 years/135 million.

So would you do that deal?
 
Due to the uncertainty of the NBA due to COVID, I would not pay Rudy over $30 per year. Because if we do, we're paying a 30 year old limited center $30+ for 3 years of his 30's. That will be extremely bad business if COVID hurts the bottom line.

This may shock you but... some players are still really good when they are 30+.

I mean Dikembe Mutombo was an all star 5-6 times after turning 30.
 
dude yes, it's "higher" ish, but only due to corona. and with the new owner, i think he's willing to take the risk for continuity and to maintain popularity. reckon he'll try to dump conley at the deadline, and do what it takes to keep clarkson. and bring favors back. which im totally fine with and want

That is also my expected course of action. However, all depends on Rudy wanting more money OR maybe the new owner talks to Don and thinks things should be built around him.

Sure it would be unpopular to trade Rudy. However, everything would be understandable in these times of COVID. Even though he has money, he has to be smart with it. Extending Rudy for $130+ might not be a wise financial decision if the NBA finances get absolutely roasted due to COVID.

I would rather take one step back in order to take 2 steps forward down the way.

This is a 2nd round team if healthy. Without Rudy, we'd fight to make the playoffs. However, if the assets are there to groom, we might become a title contender down the road.

If we traded Rudy, we could then trade Conley without much flack. Between the two deals, we get long terms pick value and hopefully at least 2 young players to groom alongside a long term vision with Donovan. Guys like Thybulle, Milton, Collins, Hunter, Huerter, etc.

I don't like taking a step back, but I also don't like being capped out or even paying the luxury in order to fight for the 2nd round.

We could just keep Rudy and take a step forward another way... just a thought.

Assuming you could even get the Atlanta deal you want (I'm skeptical but its plausible). You might be taking a step back and then taking a sideways step later.

We could even do a 4/135 but have like 15M tied to incentives for making the playoffs and games played. If he's healthy and we are a playoff team he's likely worth the money.

I ain't saying Rudy is untradeable but those that are rushing to trade him at every turn are a little silly imo. You trade Rudy if:

1- you get a godfather offer too good to refuse.
2- He refuses to sign a reasonable extension.
3- If Don and him still can't get along and you need to choose between the two... or its headed that direction.
 
If you answered "no" then you are basically saying "yes" to trading Rudy because he will get that type of money from us or another team.
