Dixie State University in southern Utah is in the process of changing its name and getting rid of “Dixie” from the name. It needs to be done and “Dixie” needs to be removed. It’s simply a term that is a disservice to the students, staff, and institution. Please take this survey to help show the support for removing “Dixie” from the schools name and changing it to something with less offensive and racist roots. Obviously the supporters of leaving the name as it is will be sharing this survey and trying to use it as justification to not change the name. So take the time if you can and support the change of the Universities name to get “Dixie” out of it.

I don’t disagree with you. It shouldn’t be the biggest deal either way, but “Dixie” really has nothing to do with Utah, and it has become an issue in placing students in jobs with a degree there because of the name in some places. The name being on the students diplomas is actually harmful in some ways and likely is going to get worse not better. It’s a disservice to the students, employees, and University to leave “Dixie” in the name for sentimental reasons of it always being that way. The reason it needs to be changed most is the benefit the students who’s degrees come from there. The University and Utah board of higher education agrees it needs to be changed and Dixie needs to be dropped because it is and has potential to be bad for students who go there with that in the name. It’s politics and people being afraid it’s “cancel culture” that are giving it pushback. The University, Student body, employees, education board etc. all want the name changed.

I mean the University wants a name change but a committee and the legislature are the ones who get to make the choice. Which is why I posted the survey so the committee gets the point.

An online petition started this summer called for the name to change, pointing to the evidence of a long history of Confederate symbolism and Southern-style practices like minstrel shows and mock slave auctions as past practices with which the community should no longer associate itself.

I think it’s long past time we put taxpayer funded Dixie State’s racist name and obviously deplorable culture to bed.

Our taxpaying dollars Shouldn’t go to losers. If they want to be losers with a loser racist name, then they should buy the college from us. But as shareholders, we shouldn’t allow our tax dollars to be sent to a school with a loser name.

My dad is from Kanab, UT so as a kid we would go there for family stuff all the time. Several of his siblings or their kids lived in or around St. George and Cedar City (and Fredonia, AZ and Las Vegas, NV. He was one of 9 kids).

I never got why they were so stupid proud of being associated with Dixie.

I think this is a big chunk of it. I also think the anti-establishment culture of rural areas is strong in southern Utah. It’s weird to me and hopefully is being studied by social scientists. But there’s a real need for rural towns to flip “the establishment” the bird and establishing its own more masculine and edgier culture. I have relatives in southern idaho. Most are pretty chill but some are definitely into the that “small town culture.”

What’s weird to me is seeing some of my friends from high schools (I’m in my mid 30s) who have done quite well. They live out on eagle mtn, Lehi, even Heber. They drive trucks worth more than both of our cars (Camry and Accord both 10 years old). They have boats, Razrs, and other fun toys. Many just worked hard after high school and have good looking families. They’re successful dudes. Yet they also have this “attitude.” It’s weird. I don’t get it. Geography plays a major part being from and living in small towns. But not everything is tied to geography.

It does. There’s a reason rural America is divided from more urban America. When you do those things to the people who live in rural America, they’re going to tend to fight against you at every turn. I grew up in a rural town, not tiny but a town of only around 10,000 people including surrounding communities. I’d like to see growth in these areas like getting rid of things like this. There’s a lack of understanding of one another more than anything.

So somewhat similarly, I matriculated at Trenton State College. About halfway through my time there, the institution changed its name to The College of New Jersey. Why? Because of the connotation with Trenton. a very urban city here in NJ.
