If/once the season is cancelled, how will the draft play out?

So what will happen? It would be awesome if the Jazz could cash in on someone like a Harrison Barnes or Teague...

Best answer is 'unknown.' There is plenty of speculation (throughout the Lockout thread), but there's only that at this point, imo.

*Maybe BOTH of Barnes and Teague ..

This is a legitimate possibility if the season is NOT canceled. If we lose the whole season, my gut is telling me our draft picks would get totally screwed over.

We only get the GS pick if it's 8th or lower, correct? I thought I remember seeing that it was top 7 protected.

I couldn't imagine they'd just give everybody the same lottery spots as last year. My guess is, they re-do the lottery with the same teams and odds as last year and everybody else drafts in the same spots.

Think of how many rookies area getting screwed over by Fisher and company. If all first round rookies get at least a 1 year guaranteed contract there will be no room in the league for the 2nd rounders of the 2011 and the 2012 draft.

All 1st round picks do already get guaranteed contracts........

There's been a lot of speculation on other boards about the NBA doing something similar to what the NHL did. Which means they would average the last 3 seasons. Of course, there could be other factors weighed in, but this could be a nightmare scenario for the Jazz. Utah would most definately lose their own pick to the Wolves, and there's a good chance GS would keep their own pick. Utah could end up with no pick at all if the season is cancelled.

3 year average puts the GS pick at #6 and our own pick at about #18. We'd lose both picks. Our best hope would be that they don't weigh all three years equally, or they add some other criteria that would drop the GS pick to #8. I don't see any possible way to avoid losing our own pick.

That's not what the NHL did.

What did they do? I'm not a big hockey fan, I'm just repeating some of what I've read. Anyway, we can only guess as to how the NBA would handle the situation. Regardless of what they did in the NHL, I'm only speculating on some of what I've been reading.

Bucher reported earlier that if the season is canceled, the likely scenario for the draft is that the last 3 seasons will be used to determine the order. the worst 14 teams would be allocated odds and a lottery for the top 3 picks would be done as usual (Bucher said that the odds wouldn't be the same as the regular lottery).

Anyway, I guess this is all pretty pointless if they get a deal done tonight. Hopefully that'll be the case.

Hope? ownership source says revised offer will give players "meaningful stuff" while staying at 50/50 BRI. Called talks "complicated."
