2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

I saw a blurb on the telley about Kyle Magnas who was the NAIA player of the year for Indiana Wesleyan. He is a 6'4" guard with a 6'9" wingspan. He averaged 29ppg last season. He was an all state basketball player in Indiana as was Mike Conley Jr. His agent is Mike Conley Sr. His college coach called him a basketball genius. He is also a 4.0 student. This kid is probably not worthy of a 2nd round draft pick but a player like this might be worthy of a spot on the 2nd summer league team.

Bones Hyland now being mocked to Utah at 30.

Good type of player to have long-term next to Mitchell. Not a point guard yet, but someone who can make some plays and ball-handle. Maybe the best shooter in the draft. Super deep range. His lack of strength limits his defensive versatility. I like his overall game a bit more than Desmond Bane, who is kind of his comp from last draft.

KSL has a mock from various sites on the Media page and Hyland was going to the Jazz in one of the sites. The one thing that gives me pause is one of the worst Jazz first round picks ever came out of VCU: Eric Maynor.

Jose Alvarado from Ga. Tech is planning to work out for the Jazz. Alvarado wasn't invited to the Combine and might go undrafted.
AJ Lawson scheduled to workout with the Jazz on Friday.

Any chance Ayo falls to us at 30?

Yes. There are enough guards in this draft with Cooper, Butler, Springer, Mann and Ayo, as well as Cam and Christopher, that at least one or two of them should drop. It's a numbers game. Bones Hyland could sneak into the 1st round too, like Quickley and Pritchard last year.

How do you feel about drafting him?

A year ago, I thought Ayo basically had the same appeal as Shake Milton. However, this past season he improved his strength and athleticism, and also his passing. He had a really great year. He's ready to contribute now, imo, but I'm not sure how high his ceiling is. What will he be able to do if he's playing off the ball next to Mitchell? In terms of talent level, he'd be a decent pick for the Jazz. I'd view him as a good, but fairly conservative pick.

Since the Jazz have been in win-now mode, they've been drafting players who are upperclassmen and more ready to contribute. I'd prefer it if they'd draft for more upside and give them a year or two to develop in the G-league. Last year, the Jazz drafted Azubuike and Hughes. But if these rookies aren't going to get playing time anyway, why not draft someone younger with more upside?

if Bones is truly the best shooter then I would draft him. Shooting covers up many weaknesses. He's skinny but typically if you eat to bulk up and weight lift that can be fixed. He seems quick too. There is lots to like.

hope the Jazz get this kid. He's like Ben Simmons with a shot.

I loved his passing. I know his competition isn't the best, but damn. The angles that he was seeing were amazing. Almost all were no looks through traffic and the ally oops were absolutely through the needle.

I also think his shot landing would be good for our modern NBA rules. Regarding the landing zone of a jump shooter. It kinda reminds me of Trey Young's landing on his jumper.

This video has me salivating. Nice find.

He's naturally skinny. He isn't going to bulk up much.

It's a bad thing.
His nickname is Bones... he either has to be skinny or ironically fat. So he needs to keep that in mind as he attempts to fill out his body.

I like him mostly because you compared him to Bane and he has a cool nickname.

Not as excited about the draft this year. I think we end up moving the pick on draft night and swapping it for a second and something. After last year having multiple guys I really liked... and very obvious directions we could have gone... and then to do with Udoka... I'm just not gonna get caught up in the hysteria this year. It'll be a fun night again...

Trae doesn't have issues. The Curry's have excelled. Not like Jordan Clarkson is jacked.

If the Bones kid is a lights out shooter and can do it off the dribble, I'm not as worried about his physique as much as I would have been 10 years ago.
