2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

Going to focus more on trade down targets now. I think it's basically a guarantee the Jazz won't draft til the 40's.

Kessler Edwards
Aaron Henry
Isaiah Livers
Jason Preston
Austin Reaves
Rokos Jokubaitis
DJ Carton
Sam Hauser
Justin Champaigne
Aamir Simms
Vrenz Bleingbergh

This is now who we looking at.
Mega barf.

If those are the options, Kessler Edwards by a country mile.

In his latest article Tony Jones mentions Joe Wieskamp as a guy that the Jazz really like, they could trade down the second round and likely still get him.

Even though it would be a dissapointment if our whole draft night existed of one mid second round pick, I could talk myself into being satisfied with Edwards or Bleijenbergh.

JT Thor might be available late 30's if the Jazz can slide in. I think him and Austin Reaves have the most upside in the 2nd round. Thor for his elite length and wing skill potential and Reaves because he has some of the best overall skill in the draft, it's just about making it work in a NBA game and getting the opportunity to do so. I'd also put Todd and Christopher in the 1st tier, but I dont think Utah can trade down and still be in their range (but fingers crossed).

Preston and Vrenz would be the 2nd tier of potential to me.

Guys like Wieskamp and Henry have less potential, but are more likely to be plus role players than most other 2nd round picks we could potentially get. Livers and Champaigne are the tier below them for the same kind of player.

Simms and Edwards intrigue me, but neither really look like NBA players to me with the way they move. Edwards got a funky *** shot and is kind of between positions and Simms is too upright.

DJ Carton is a sleeper undrafted/late 2nd round type. His story is interesting. Committed to Ohio State and had an OK freshman year (Outplayed Tyrese Maxey head to head in a win over Kentucky), but transferred due to mental health issues. Had a solid year at Marquette but his 3pt shooting dropped off a cliff after being a 40% 3pt shooter at Ohio State. Will absolutely throw down and posterize people despite only being 6'2 w/ a 6'6 wingspan.

What need does Joe ****ing Wieskamp address? Doesn’t seem to be a lockdown perimeter defender, nor does he seem to be a point guard.

I read that Tony piece and threw up in my mouth a little. I really didn’t like any of the scenarios he teased out.

What does he bring? Are you kidding me?

Players who project as elite shooters with 7' wingspans don't grow on trees. He's not a lockdown defender, but he's underrated defensively. He has a really nice frame that can fill out. He's a smart player who can pass. His only real weakness is a lack of off the dribble game, but he has show some flashes of 1-2 dribble self-creation. He's a dream pick.

He's a player I would be scared to trade down for. He could go at any point in the 2nd round. Of course these teams are way smarter than us when it comes to projecting the draft and having intel, but it just seems so fluid from in that first third or so of the 2nd round.

No, I’m not kidding you. Have you watched his highlights? He is a turn style on defense and can’t keep college players out of the lane, can’t defend in the PNR to save his life, and doesn’t appear to be a good individual or team defender.

He is a fantastic shooter. But we have plenty of shooting. We have zero perimeter defense. Were we watching the same team this year?

Yes, I've watched him for 3 years as he's been one of my favorite college players. The critiques on his D are way way out of line. He played on ****ing Iowa. He was by far the best defender on the team on a team of atrocious defenders. He's not a guy you want being your primary defender, but he's going to learn to become a strong help defender that will hold his own on the boards.

Wieskamp gets a lot of hate on defense because he's a white guy who looks like Duncan Robinson but here's KOC's blurb about his D in the "strengths" part

  • A competitive defender who shined at the combine, displaying NBA-level quickness on the perimeter and physicality inside as a rebounder.

I’m liking Grimes. I think he could end up just being a volume three point shooter and solid defender… kinda see Wes Matthew’s in there. I’ve admittedly only seen highlights. Think we could do a lot worse. I think he has a pretty solid floor especially for a pick at the end of the first round.

I really like him too. And I believe in his shot. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone by 30. He seems like a Bucksy kind of player.

Some of Givony’s mock draft and intel. He has is taking Jaden Springer at 30

  • NOLA Pelicans Looking to Trade Down for More Vets - "Several NBA teams say the Pelicans are exploring trading down or out from this slot, looking for veteran contributors who can help them make a playoff run next season."
  • Atlanta Hawks Preferring Cost-controlled Contracts - "The Hawks may look to restart the cycle by moving one of their rookie-scale-contract players, such as Cam Reddish, for a first-round pick, as it's unlikely that they'll be able to pay all of their young players."
  • Utah Jazz Looking to Shed Some Salary - "The Jazz reportedly have some luxury tax concerns they may look to address on draft night, potentially by dangling one of the veterans, such as Joe Ingles, for a draft pick."

Maybe I am overthinking Joe's future. Maybe he stays in the states for a few more years and collects checks... he just seems like 75% of the time he'd rather be in Australia with his family. I think he would hate moving his kids and I would think an acquiring team would factor that into the price. Like with JJ Reddick last year.

I also think it would rip part of the heart and soul out of this squad for Joe to be traded for a first. I guess if he is leaving in a year anyway it would be shrewd to get some future value for it. It just doesn't feel good at all.

I will be shocked if anyone besides Favors is moved to shed salary.

I don't mind him, but I think he gets drafted near the mid 2nd round. He can do some Kevin Huerter things.
