I think about what would've happened if they'd kept Rubio, and the idea has merit, due to a) his size, b) his defense, and c) his coming at 1/3 the price of Conley, plus not costing Crowder, Allen, and two picks. It's a hingsight thing, but it's not a crazy argument.
 
Honestly, I just think Zanick is aggressively calling everyone on everything at this point. Because the rumors are so conflicting and going in every direction. Who knows what they're going to do.

Why is Rubio even part of that train of thought, though? Re-signing Rubio was not necessary for the rest of those things to happen. If they couldn't find the right "PG" to pair with Donovan, then just stop delaying what looks inevitable at the end of every season and just make Donovan the "1". Or while we're still fantasizing, use that cap-space to sign Brogdon. And/or sign Caruso when he was in-limbo that offseason.

There are lots of ways we could try to answer the question before coming back what is both familiar and what glaringly didn't work.

I don't like living in the past, but we were always clamoring for a stretch 4 in place of Favors. If we took that defense first philosophy team and replace Favors with Bojan, we might have had something special.

Rubio, Joe, Crowder, Royce as perimeter defenders. I'm done talking about it, but in hindsight, Rubio and Crowder would have been better than just Mike.

If Joe is really on the table and it's not because Joe asked them, it's strong evidence this organization is now being run from the top-down by casuals. He is the glue that has consistently held this team together on and off the court during all of the playoff runs.
