How does this happen in a civilised society?

Wow..I threw up. I can't imagine the adults in charge allowing this to happen. How did this happen? Did the adults not stop the teasing? If it was severe then they should have done something..anything..or did they dismiss it? I know autism is a difficult condition that other kids are never mature in handling. Geez so heart wrenching. How do you handle racism in teasing? Rights are not being denied but kids are laughing..do the adults not see that? I wonder if the adults just make a generic statement to their kids..treat others fairly but then crack a joke about someone of the other race? Maybe they are just blind about the disconnect.

You know what..this is similar to what we see on this forum.. proclaim loudly against racism but every now and then we crack a subtle racialistic joke with racial undertones...

But on the other hand, the herd thinking of little kids..they like to harp on differences. I can see where it is not taught to be hurtful but I can see an adult not stopping it. At the bare minimum it should have been loudly and forcibly confronted by a responsible adult.

I knew a kid in high school who was autistic who got beat up every two weeks or so. He was teased a lot. I feel bad for not taking a consistent stand.

My self, in junior high school, was teased every day in junior high school. I was tall gangly and goofy.. I also refused to fight back. I remember.kids.lining up to punch me as I arrived at school. I got two black eyes.

I thought in my mind to turn the other cheek and Jesus would not want me to hurt anyone. I wish an adult would have intervened.

This is a serious problem. I wish Ryan Smith or Dwayne Wade or any member of the Jazz would intervene. When I was growing had someone from the Lakers showed up at the school to talk about this topic. I think it would have stopped it for at least a few months. We have five for the fight..but where is the engagement on this topic..just.show up once please and encourage the kids for better behavior. Talk about all levels of racism and bullying and that none of it is okay. Just one school..any school please..even doing it once would get everyone talking including the adults. Please.
 
Davis county and the Ogden area needs jobs too. That area is rundown and the exact opposite of silicon slopes. It is not super bad like Richfield but still..that place needs some hope. Lots of single parents, housing still from the early 1900 hundreds, hardly anyone there could afford a Jazz game let alone get enough to eat. Maybe figure out a way to get somes jobs up there would help a lot too.

Are they?

Seems to me like most of Davis county is doing fine. You see new homes (5x the size of mine) and business all over north salt lake, Kaysville, and north Ogden. Even homes in Plain City and Syracuse go for half a million.

Are there pockets of some older homes? Sure, like everywhere. There’s an older side of Layton and Kaysville but there are far more newer areas too just Lehi, Draper, and Sandy. The growth rate isn’t that dissimilar to Utah county. Would the population have doubled since 1980 if there weren’t jobs?

I’m not sure we can blame the bullying on economics. Is the economy worse in Davis county? What’s the per capita income? Are there more single parents in Davis and Ogden than SL county or Utah county? How do we know they have less hope than those living south of them? When did they have hope and jobs?

I think there’s real risk in memorializing the past the way we sometimes do. The past wasn’t as good as we remember while the present and future isn’t nearly as bad as we think.

It was my impression when I looking to buy a home. I looked all around the state. That was about 20 years ago. I remember lots of railroad tracks through the city and homes falling apart. The housing was dirt cheap.

There are areas of Lehi that have railroad tracks. Maybe you were just looking in bad areas? The population of Davis county has more than doubled since 1980. Why would that happen if homes were falling apart, railroad tracks everywhere, and the place was economically depressed?

Dirt cheap? I’d suggest you open up your Zillow app. You might be surprised. My parents Bought a home in Orem 20 years ago and still thought a few years ago that homes in salt lake and utah county were still going for $200,000 lol.

Historically the railroad came through the Ogden bypassing SLC. Hill Air force base is here. If I wanted to be somewhere separate from the dominant culture of Utah and find a tiny bit of diversity it would be in Ogden.
 
I will start by saying this is heartbreaking. I cannot fathom the level of pain the family is going through. But only one side of the story is being heard.
My kids go to this school. I have had a kid enrolled there every year since it opened. My oldest daughter started in kindergarten there the first year it opened. She’s now a senior. In past instances when my daughter was bullied, I can tell you the administration handled it quickly, firmly, and appropriately.
My daughter had that teacher last year. I have been in that teacher’s classroom doing presentations and during class teaching hours. I was and am still having a very hard time believing the things I’m hearing about her. I won’t go so far as to say there is absolutely no way, but just about.
A member of my son’s baseball team is in that class this year. He says he never witnessed any kind of bullying or racist comments or interactions involving her. Again, I will not say these things weren’t happening. Having personally spoken to at least one member of the office staff and a couple substitute teachers at the school, I can tell you this: don’t believe everything you are hearing about it. The school staff has been put under a gag order by the district, but they are firm in saying not everything being circulated is accurate.
I DO NOT think this girl lied about anything. The only thing I’m saying is that my experience with this school and teacher in particular have been vastly different than what is being portrayed.
Again, this is heartbreaking. A terrible situation from every aspect.
