Trade deadline discussion

Though if we got Beverley, Quin probably gets mad and tells him not to do what he does but to funnel to Rudy.

Why would Minny extend him?
Because they like him and he wants an extension. He is helping change the culture a bit there and seems happy... not a lot of vets love it in minny.

Bev is a vet so Quin would let him ride. Also, no one tells him what to do.

another guy I've loved for a while is De' Anthony Melton. He was mentioned in a trade piece on the Athletic where Detroit was looking for Jerami Grant destinations. I think Memphis and Grant is actually a damn great fit... but Melton was going to Detroit in the deal. I'm sure we could talk them into a 1st and some salary fodder for Melton. Might have to be an Ingles deal. He's a very active defender who has shown some good shooting ability. He's locked into a great contract for a couple years.

Sending Joe to Detroit (or they could find a team that wants Joe for their expiring salary plus some second round picks) with a pick and taking back Melton would save us a ton of tax this year... like $15M. which DL can use to reinvest in the program.

A subtle, yet exceptional point

When the Jazz traded Derrick Favors to the Oklahoma City Thunder this past offseason, they created a large trade exception worth $9 million. It expires on June 27, which is important, because that extends through the NBA Draft. What the exception means is that the Jazz can absorb a contract worth up to the amount of the exception without having to send a matching salary in return.

For a Jazz front office, this could come in handy. If there is a team that’s ready to pack it in for the season or if teams become sellers at the trade deadline, the Jazz can take a useful player without having to surrender a useful player.

Trade exceptions often expire. But, this could be something to watch in this season for the Jazz, as they try to fortify their roster as much as possible.

I would be willing to bet we go down in salary instead of going up. I think we are in the 3-1 bracket of tax payers so taking on a 9M guy means he costs $27M in tax... plus his prorated salary. We are likely in repeater territory next year meaning a guy could cost even more if it is a longer deal. Adding a player to the current group doesn't change things unless they are better than Joe or Hassan they won't play.

Not trying to be a dick... just poo poo-ing the notion of us spending more... it is a nice thing to note but I'd bet we'd use it in the summer if we use it at all.

In addition to this:

Yeah having you anchors be that strong defensively can make everyone else more complacent, covers up their sins so to speak.

I don’t think they use that.
I think the only way they do is if they did a 2 for 1 deal where they take less salary in than they send out... and then they find a good value like Justin Holiday for a second.

So say you landed Marcus Smart but it cost you Joe Ingles and Royce... then maybe you can justify adding Holiday (if he's available). Torrey Craig would be another potential guy and you likely get a second rounder in that deal.

I think just about the only way we get in on a good deal is sliding in on a 3-4 team trade and snaking a guy like Smart, Melton... I just don't think a first plus Joe is what those teams are looking for... but if it is part of an asset grab for a bigger deal... Dame, Ben Simmons, Grant... then I can see us landing something worthwhile.
