Memo the clutch man

But even the shortest player on the opposing team can guard him on the perimeter. It only takes a hand in his face to throw off his shot, as San Antonio demonstrated repeatedly in the playoffs.

They never guard him with the shortest player. He pulls a big outside of the paint, allowing the post players more room, thereby rendering them more effective. This has been seen in countless games and cannot be denied. It is why Boozer looked so good here and sucked it up in Chicago where he has to contend with multiple people defending the paint rather than just beating his lone defender to the basket off a well-placed pick and roll while Memo pulls the other post defender outside the paint.

Even if he is a step slower, his shot will still be respected and he will still make teams pay for leaving him alone on the perimeter, and Favors/AJ/Kanter will benefit from playing inside with Memo in the game.

Memo's last game with Turk Telekom and his 3 pointer at the end won it for Telekom. Happy to see him leave Turkey with a game winner :))

I went to games to see him play 2 times and watched him on TV several times. Honestly, when I compare his first performance and recent performances, I can see a huge improvement. With a point guard not named Darius ballhog Washington, he could really average 18-20 pts a game. That's a good sign for a player whose signature is scoring. He got into shooting rhythm and I think he is as fit as ever. However, I think that he will be affected by this shortened preseason schedule.

I'm not high on him this time but I'm sure that he will do whatever it takes to contribute, and that he will not play selfishly to convince GM's that he is worth a fat contract. In a recent interview I got the feeling that he thinks he can still contribute at a high level but is well aware of the fact that the Jazz have a young core to build on. When it comes to PT division, I'm the winner no matter what. Enes and/or Memo on the floor will be a reason for me to get up at 4 AM and watch some basketball :)

Good God, what defense?.
Fixed.

Memo is an intriguing matchup--a big that can hit the 3.

But so is Matt Bonner.

You know, the Matt Bonner who was making a mere $3.2 million in 2009-2010 for the superiorly-run San Antonio Spurs, and whose salary went down to $3.0 million in 2010-2011, in stark contrast to Okur's unjustified 10%+ raise from $9 million to $9.9 million during the same time frame--and was slated to go into eight figures (if a full non-truncated season had been played) this year.

In 2009-10--the last season in which Okur played a majority of games--Memo averaged 17 and 9 per 36 minutes; Bonner, 14 and 7.

Bonner is one year younger, having celebrated his 30th birthday last year.

Difference is Memo can actually played close to 36 mpg, while Bonner barely got what, 20 mpg? Of course his stats are going to be comparable. If he was asked to play 30 mpg every game his per 36 numbers would drop.

Pure conjecture.

Memo provides a couple of good skills (great shooter, good man-to-man defender if he's not defending someone with speed, good defensive rebounder [not great]) but is on the whole wildly overrated by Jazz fans.

If Matt Bonner's a 1 and Dirk Nowitzki's a 10, Memo's a 4. Maybe a 3.

Right, individually Memo has a few very effective skills but as an individual player he's pretty limited. His immeasurable value to Utah has been his ability to make his teammates better. It wasn't just his shooting, it was the threat his shooting provided. He spaced the floor so Deron/Boozer could run screen-roll with out the defense collapsing, he created offensive rebounding lanes for players like Boozer, AK and Harpring by drawing a big out to the 3pt line, he gave Boozer more favorable matchups with slower centers, he allowed Ronnie Brewer to float along the baseline while he spaced the floor, he gave Deron that great trailer option on the break after Deron's initial penetration was cutoff. IMO Memo and Sam Perkins were the two best 3pt-shooting centers in the past 20 years.

I just don't think he has much of that left in the tank, but again, as a 4th big Utah could do alot worse.

I understand all of that, but I still fail to see how he was 3 times the player Matt Bonner was. That's even more quizzical the assertion now.

But I agree, as a 4th big, you won't realistically find a better guy. IMO, that is his ideal role from now on.

His health has apparently improved greatly and was able to give quality minutes to his Turkish team. I would not count him out yet.

From 05-08, I'd say a Memo-Bonner comparison wasn't even close. Now, I'll agree it's obviously much closer (especially if you use the "Matt Bonner vs. Utah" who always seems to torch us more than the other 28 teams in the league.)
